Mount Mentors

Meaningful Relationships, Promising Futures

The Mentors Program, sponsored through the Center for Leadership, pairs dedicated and promising students with successful alumnae/i, trustees, and friends of the College. Through the guidance and example of their mentors, students discover vital connections between their academic studies and the professional world. Each mentor/student pair meets regularly throughout the academic year and maintains frequent contact by phone and email. Students also shadow their mentors in the workplace.

The relationship with a mentor is intended to expand each student’s understanding and appreciation of their own talents, opportunities, and expectations of themselves. Students are often matched with professionals who work outside the student’s field of interest in order to emphasize the transfer-ability and universal nature of the skills necessary for success in any field.

Empowering CMSV Students: A Recap of the 2023-2024 Mount Mentors Cohort Introduction Dinner

The Mount Mentors Program at the University of Mount Saint Vincent focuses on fostering connections between dedicated and promising students and successful alumnae/i, trustees, and friends of the College. The program is committed to creating an atmosphere dedicated to the positive growth and professional development of Mount student leaders.

On the evening of Wednesday, September 27, 2023, the Mount Mentors Program took center stage as it unfolded its vision for the year ahead. The essence of this program lies in the intention to expand each student’s understanding and appreciation of their unique talents, opportunities, and self-expectations. What sets this program apart is the fact that it brings together over 20 Mount alumnae/i as mentors and also welcomes six friends of the College, including founding Center for Leadership Co-Advisory Council members Mike Hoffman, Pamela J. Newman, and John Prufeta.

One of the highlights of the evening was the intentional matching of each student with a mentor who can help guide them on their academic and professional journey after graduation. The Mount Mentors Program recognizes the importance of personalized guidance and support, tailored to the individual needs of each student. This flexibility ensures that students receive the support they need to thrive in their chosen fields, all while accommodating their busy lifestyles. Such professions include nursing, education, business, psychology and healthcare.

Among the many students embarking on this exciting mentorship journey is junior Orangel Meija ’25, the current Student Body President. Orangel’s passion and excitement for fostering connections is a testament to the transformative potential of the Mount Mentors Program. While double majoring in history and public policy, he looks to step into government upon graduating from the Mount. His mentor is none other than the President of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, Rob Walsh, who has a wealth of knowledge from his years of experience from his time as the former New York City Commissioner for Small Business Services. Rob will provide helpful mentorship for Orangel’s success after college.

Reflecting on the Introduction Dinner, Orangel shared his perspective: “The Mount Mentors Program will help me continue to grow into who I am meant to be, as well as ensure that, once I graduate, I am not on my journey alone—I know Rob will have my back.”

His words capture the essence of the program—it is not just about academic and professional growth, but also personal development and self-discovery.

The Mount Mentors Introduction Dinner marked the beginning of an exciting journey for Mount students and their mentors under the Center for Leadership. As they embark on this path of growth, learning, and mutual support, we look forward to witnessing the positive impact this program will have on the University of Mount Saint Vincent community.

Stay tuned for more updates on the inspiring stories and achievements that will undoubtedly emerge from this remarkable mentorship program!
