Studying Nursing

The Department of Nursing prepares students to become professional nurses who will address the complex health-related problems of a diverse population across the lifespan. The Department carries out its mission with an awareness of the diversity and needs of our community of interest, offers students a sense of responsibility, critical thinking, open inquiry, and self-respect, and acknowledges the need for lifelong learning.

Students may pursue a B.S. in Nursing or a B.S./M.S. in Nursing. Nursing students are trained in a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory that features high- and low-fidelity medical simulations with live, trained actors. Clinical training takes place through our network of affiliations with area hospitals.

Nursing students learn to integrate knowledge from the liberal arts and sciences into professional nursing practice. Students use leadership concepts to plan, implement, delegate, supervise, and evaluate outcomes of patient care, integrate evidence for multiple ways of knowing when planning, implementing, and evaluating outcomes of care, and ethically use information and communication technology to obtain nursing practice data. Students also document and evaluate patient outcomes, advocate for health care policies that address local and global health issues influencing health care and practice, employ evidence-based nursing care in a variety of settings through collaboration with patients and other health care providers, and facilitate healthy behaviors in patients in a variety of settings. By assuming responsibility for their own professional development, students use what they have learned to plan competent, effective, and evidence-based nursing care that contributes to safe and high quality outcomes.

With small classes and a close proximity to the resources and opportunities of New York City, students enjoy personalized attention in addition to an assigned advisor. Many online resources, including online testing and experiential learning, are another feature of this highly sought-after program.
