10 Student Delegates Represent the University of Mount Saint Vincent

Riverdale, N.Y. – Not every college student has the opportunity to debate global issues on an international stage at a prestigious university. So when that chance came for 10 students from the University of Mount Saint Vincent last week, they took their moment and made it shine.

The Mount’s Model United Nations team traveled to downtown Boston to debate global issues at the Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) 2015 conference, which ran from February 12-15.

The HNMUN conference annually gathers more than 3,000 students and faculty from around the world to simulate the activities of the United Nations, focusing on topics of diplomacy, international relations, and much more. This was HNMUN’s 61st session—it is the oldest, largest, and most diverse Model United Nations conference.

The Mount’s Model U.N. team represented Bosnia-Herzegovina on behalf of the social, humanitarian, and cultural committee. The student delegates that represented the Mount were Anita Mernacaj ’15, Gidalthy Estevez ’15, Victor Vasquez ’16, Papa Jo Amissah ’17, Bianca Alexis ’17, Selina Macias ’18, Carol Palacios ’18, Kaitlin Moreno ’19, Giovanna Pinto ’19, and Alexandra Maxwell ’19.

“The Model U.N.’s mission to foster a generation of socially responsible young leaders who are committed to making a positive impact, both today and in the future, is entirely in line with the College mission,” says Mount Assistant Professor Mariela Wong, Director of the Center for International Studies, and advisor for the Mount’s Model U.N. team. “Many Mount students who have participated in these international Model U.N. conferences and debates have been drawn to internship opportunities in international relations and have also studied abroad. These rich, outside-the-classroom experiences empower our students on so many levels, encouraging them to lead lives of achievement, service, and leadership.”
