College of Mount Saint Vincent Student Athletes Earn Spot on Skyline Honor Roll

2/17/2015

Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent saw 10 percent of its student athletes achieve high academic honors while keeping up a full schedule of athletic competition. “We like to say, ‘Mount students are smart and strong,’” said John Butler, director of athletics.

More than 260 student athletes competed in 15 intercollegiate sports at the Mount during 2013- 2014. This past fall, 26 student athletes from the Mount appeared on the Skyline Conference’s 2014 Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Skyline Conference commissioner Linda Bruno this week announced the Academic Honor Roll for the 2014 Fall sports season, which honors student athletes in the conference with a 3.3 grade point average and above, while competing in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf, women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

“I take great pride in honoring these individuals who epitomize the student athlete experience,” says Ms. Bruno. “The time and hard work they put forth to achieve academic and athletic excellence is inspiring and should serve as an example to all.”

Women’s soccer comprises the largest Mount sports team to be named to the Skyline Honor Roll with 11 students. They are Erin Dailey, Shannon Doyle, Samantha Fioravanti, Rita Guglielmo, Courtney LaTorre, Erica Lencsak, Elizabeth Martin, Taylor McGinn, Kerilyn O’Keeffe, Lauren Tate, and Kelsey Wasnesky. Men’s cross country athletes named to the Skyline Honor Roll were James Goldberg, Patrick Goldberg, Marco-Justin Lucas, Xavier Salce, and James Wilkins. Women’s cross country team members Danielle Maffei and Shannon Reilly, and men’s soccer team members Marcial Aguilar were also named. Women’s volleyball honor roll members were Zana Daluz, Rachel Gabriel, Kristine Javier, Maria Leineweber, Nichole Riehm, Ashleigh Scozzari, and Shannon Walsh.

“We encourage all Mount students to fully engage with opportunities both inside and outside the classroom,” said Mr. Butler. According to a 2013 study from the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute, seniors at the Mount have a 31% higher participation rate in educational enrichment experiences than the national average for seniors at other colleges—including hours spent participating in co-curricular activities. Added Mr. Butler, “We are very proud of the hard work and dedication of these young men and women. They exemplify the attitude of success we strive for across the Mount Athletics Department, and we celebrate in their accomplishment.”

Alyssa Kaufman, the College’s women’s head volleyball coach, praised her teams’ work in the classroom. “I am proud of the dedication these girls have demonstrated off the court with their academics,” she says. “They have high standards for their school work and were successful in keeping that first.”
