College of Mount Saint Vincent Hosted Start Smart Salary Negotiation Workshop
12/4/2012 - Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent hosted the Start Smart workshop, benchmarking starting salaries and negotiation, sponsored by the Sociology Department and the Mentorship Program at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and The WAGE (Women are Getting Even) Project, on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. in the President’s Reception Room.

Dr. Kristin Lawler, Assistant Professor of Sociology, introduced Jane Pendergast, President of the AAUW Westchester branch, and the facilitator of the workshop Annie Houle, National Director of Campus and Community Initiatives for WAGE.

Start Smart is a workshop that addresses discrimination in the workplace and overcoming the gender pay gap.  The objective is to help each of the attendees to receive the knowledge to get paid fairly after graduation.

“This is a really big deal,” says Dr. Lawler. “It’s really a wonderful workshop.”

The workshop was supported by a grant from the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund Campus Outreach program, where branches and members of the AAUW can receive funding to implement a gender equity-focused program at their local college or university.
