College of Mount Saint Vincent Awarded $1.3 Million Federal Grant from U.S. Department of Education

7/16/2015

Funding Benefits the College’s Network of Academic Support and Enrichment Programs

Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent has been awarded a TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO/SSS) grant from the United States Department of Education. The grant will provide $278,539 annually over five years in support of the College’s efforts to promote the academic success of first-generation college students, students with disabilities and/or students with significant financial need.

This grant, which will run through the summer of 2020, is a renewal. The College has received TRIO/SSS funding since 1997 and offers a coordinated network of academic support as well as career development and cultural enrichment services that enhance academic performance and graduation rates.

“We are delighted with the renewal of our TRIO grant,” said Charles L. Flynn, Jr., president of the University of Mount Saint Vincent. “Mount student do excellent academic work and graduate to exceptional careers—from medicine to business, and social services to market research. Just this week, the College was among a handful of institutions in the New York to earn an “A-” range grade from Money Magazine. High quality academic support services are one of the reasons. The TRIO grant makes it possible for the Mount to expand the support that helps students to get over academic speed bumps, formulate plans, and pursue effective strategies for success.”

The grant was announced by Congressman Eliot Engel on July 16, 2015. “The Student Supportive Services Program has been a beacon of hope for countless students across the country who have had to overcome difficult circumstances as they pursued their college education,” said Congressman Engel. “The University of Mount Saint Vincent has always done a wonderful job supporting their students. They are a great partner in the community and a great institution for students from New York’s 16th District and beyond. I am pleased that they have once again been selected to receive this important federal funding.”
