M.S. in Urban and Multicultural Education Admission Requirements

Applicants who possess New York State provisional or initial certification in childhood education may participate in the program on either a part-time or full-time basis. 

Required Documents


Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or institution and have an undergraduate cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.

New York State Certification
Please submit a copy of New York State certification. Individuals who do not possess New York State Certification may petition for acceptance into the program.
Official transcripts from all post secondary institutions attended. The undergraduate GPA required for admission is 3.0. Applicants who have non-U.S. credentials must present a course-by-course evaluation of their international credentials. A number of agencies provide this service. The preferred service is the World Education Services (WES).
Please submit 2 letters of recommendation (one professional and one academic letter preferred).

References and transcripts can be sent separately or as part of the complete application. Both references and transcripts should be sent in envelopes sealed by the individual issuing the reference or the college issuing the official transcript. Copies and open envelopes are unofficial documents and will not be accepted.
Writing Proficiency
All degree candidates must complete the English Essay Exam prior to their first semester of study. No special preparation is required. Contact the Graduate Program for an appointment to take the examination. Anyone whose proficiency exam demonstrates weakness in writing will be referred to the Academic Resource Center and/or registered for a non-credit course to improve writing skills prior to enrollment in graduate courses.

An application for admission must be complete, and each admission requirement must be fulfilled within one year from the date of initial filing. Applications remaining incomplete for a period longer than one year will be considered withdrawn.

All required information must be on file before an admission decision will be made
by the Admission Committee.
