Mount Alumnus Walter Galiano, Jr. Named Top Teacher in New York City
3/5/2012 - Riverdale, N.Y. – CMSV alumnus Walter Galiano ’04, M.S.’06 received top marks in the City’s Teacher Data Reports, a controversial attempt to assess the impact that individual teachers have on the progress of their students, using demographics and past student performance on tests, among other factors, to gauge the best and worst educators in the five boroughs.

According to an article in the New York Times, Mr. Galiano taught for nearly a decade at P.S. 205 near the Bronx Zoo and was promoted to assistant principal of P.S. 69 in the Bronx in 2010. A Bronx native, Mr. Galiano received his bachelor’s degree in history and teacher education from the Mount, and his master’s degree in Urban & Multicultural Education.

“We are very proud of the achievements of Mr. Galiano,” says Dr. Mary Ellen Sullivan, chair of the Department of Teacher Education at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. “At a time when teachers are being measured and held accountable for students’ performance on standardized tests, the Mount is proud that the education that Mr. Galiano received at Mount Saint Vincent, combined with his individual gifts and dedication to his profession, has served the students of the Bronx and New York City very well.”
