Yaphank, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team evened its overall record on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn at Baseball Heaven. The Dolphins came from behind to pick up a 15-14 extra inning win in game one and then powered past the Bears 21-5 to complete the sweep in game two. Junior captain John McManus knocked in six runs for the Mount in the second game.

After falling behind 4-0 after the top of the first inning in game one, the Dolphins plated six in the home half of the second frame to pull in front. Danny Watson (Queens, N.Y.) keyed the rally with a two run double and James Labartino (Holbrook, N.Y.) drove in the final two runs of the stanza with a single to give the Mount the lead.

The Bears responded with a run in their next at-bat and then pulled in front 10-6 with a five run fourth inning. St. Joseph’s would continue to add on runs with single tallies in the fifth to take a 12-10 lead into the seventh inning. Trailing by two runs in the seventh the Dolphins got RBI singles from Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.) and Mike Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) to knot the score at 12-12 and send the game into extra innings.

St. Joseph’s quickly retook the lead when Joe Harten connected on a two run home run in the top of the eighth to give the Bears the lead back at 14-12. The Dolphins again battled back in the bottom of the inning and with two on and two outs sophomore Ryan Hollborn (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) connected on a triple to extend the game to another inning.

Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, N.Y.) would retire the side in order for the Dolphins in the ninth and then played hero in the bottom of the frame when he delivered Pope with a single to give Mount Saint Vincent its first win of the season.

Pope and Blackford each collected two hits in the contest with Blackford earning the win on the mound. Four Dolphins drove in two runs, including Hollborn who’s triple gave the Mount life in the eight. Mike Ruckdaschel (East Meadow, N.Y.) scored four runs for the Dolphins in game one.

Harten led the Bears in the slugfest with five hits and an impressive 10 RBI. He connected on three home runs in the game for the St. Joseph’s

In game two the Dolphins again fell behind after the top half of the first inning, but would respond with two in the home half and would go on to score in each at bat except one in the victory. The Dolphins had scoring innings of five runs, six runs and seven runs in the game.

Five Mount Saint Vincent players had at least two hits in game two, with Hollborn going 3-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. John McManus had a big second game as he finished up 2-3 with two runs and six RBI. He drilled his first home run of the season and his second career grand slam in the win.

Freshman Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) picked up his first career win on the mound for the Dolphins after working 4.0 innings and allowing just a pair of earned runs. He fanned five in his first collegiate outing. Classmate James Puma (Thornwood, N.Y.) came on to work the final 3.0 innings and pick up his first career save.

The sweep pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 2-2 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action again when they host Western Connecticut on Thursday afternoon. First pitch at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, N.Y.) is slated for 3:30 p.m.
