1/10/2007 - It
has been well documented that the Mount Saint
Vincent Women's Basketball team has made up
considerable ground on the rest of the Skyline
Conference during the early part of the 2006-07
season. Wins over Manhattanville and Centenary,
followed by an overtime loss to Farmingdale State
and a loss to USMMA-Kings Point that went to the
final seconds proved that the Dolphins are a
contender in the Conference despite boasting a
roster consisting of mainly freshman. But in Skyline
Conference Women's Basketball, there is a major
difference between competing with "the
rest" and defeating "the best" as it
is impossible to be considered a contender without
going through Mount Saint Mary. The seven-time
defending Skyline Conference Champions have defeated
the Mount by an average of 31.6 points during eight
meetings over the last four years, and on Wednesday
night, the Dolphins traveled to Mount Saint Mary for
their first meeting of the 2006-07 season. 40
minutes later two things were clear: Mount Saint
Mary is still the very best the Skyline Conference
has to offer, but Mount Saint Vincent is right there
with them.
1/8/2007 -
Mount Saint Vincent freshman Courtney
Heesemann (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park
HS) was recruited to play Women's Basketball at
the Mount for dozens of reasons: She is an
outstanding interior player who is capable of
turning in a double-double every game. She is a
tremendous worker, a fearless leader, and a team
player who is the leader of a very good Mount Saint
Vincent team in both rebounds and scoring despite
her status as a rookie. However, of the many reasons
why Head Coach
1/3/2007 - A
year ago, first year Mount Saint Vincent Head
Women's Basketball Coach Ed
Ryder saw his team
mired in a slump almost from day one. The Dolphins
began the year 2-2, but an eight-game losing streak
put the Mount at 2-10 during the early stages of
2006, and the Dolphins never fully recovered. After
graduating one of the best senior classes in the
history of the program and boasting a 2006-07
line-up that includes eight freshmen, Ryder and
company expected a rebuilding year, however much to
his delight the team has surpassed expectations,
opening the campaign by winning five of their first
seven games, and now for the second time this season
a Dolphin has earned Skyline Conference Rookie of
the Week honors as freshman Courtney
Heesemann (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park
HS) was awarded this week after an incredible effort
during a 75-37 win over Yeshiva on Dec. 19.
1/2/2007 - The
first games of 2007 for the Mount Saint Vincent
Men's & Women's Basketball teams proved
to be quite a challenge for the Dolphins on
Tuesday afternoon as Mount Saint Vincent lost both
ends of a doubleheader to national powerhouse NYU as
the Men's team opened play with an 86-47 loss,
while the Women's team fell 75-33. The twin-bill
marked the beginning of a crucial stretch of games
for both teams as an important series of Conference
games are right around the corner.
11/17/2006 -
Women's Basketball season is here, and Mount Saint
Vincent is poised for what will be one of their most
challenging seasons in recent memory as the Dolphins'
line-up features nearly exclusively freshmen. However,
second year Head Coach Ed Ryder feels
his team has all of the tools to challenge once again for
the HVWAC Championship and Skyline Conference
post-season. Read all about how Ryder and
company are gearing up for the 2006-07 season in
this special edition of The Dolphin Digest.
8/8/2006 -
Mount Saint Vincent Director of Athletics
Cathy Ingram has announced the
hiring of Jessica Stzabinik as
Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach. The former
Jessica Nowak is a 2001 graduate of NYU where she
was a four-year letter winner for their powerhouse
Women’s Basketball team. Stzabinik started 88
games during her career and was a Co-Captain of the
2000-01 team that advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals
playing under legendary Head Coach Janice Quinn.
3/22/2006 - Mount Saint Vincent
senior men’s basketball players James
Mooney (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep), Charles
Hernandez (Bronx, NY/Msgr. Scanlan), and
women’s basketball players Andrea
DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters) and
Laura Bucci (Irvington, NY/Our Lady of
Victory) will represent the Mount one final time on the
hardwood on Wednesday night as they will participate in
the inaugural Skyline-NJAC Senior Basketball game at New
Jersey City University.
3/2/2006 -
Mount Saint Vincent Men’s Basketball senior
James Mooney (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep)
and Women’s Basketball senior Andrea
DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters) were
both named All-Conference by the Skyline Conference
today after incredible seasons to end their
respective careers in fine fashion. Mooney was named
First Team All-Conference for the second consecutive
season after earning Honorable Mention
All-Conference as a sophomore, while DiNizo was
named Honorable Mention All-Conference for her first
ever Skyline Conference honor.
3/1/2006 -
Mount Saint Vincent senior guard Andrea
DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters) and
sophomore forward Kaitlin Burud
(Red Hook, NY/Red Hook HS) were named to the
All-Conference team of the Hudson Valley
Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC) after
outstanding seasons in which the duo helped lead
Mount Saint Vincent to runner-up finishes in both
the regular season and championship tournament.
2/20/2006 -
Mount Saint Vincent senior Meagan
Fitzpatrick (Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of
Victory) notched her fourth double-double of the
2005-06 season, and all four Dolphin seniors
combined for 50 points and 32 rebounds, but the
Dolphins struggle with one of their worst shooting
performances of the 2005-06 season and fell to
Centenary, 72-64 in the Skyline Conference play-in
game at Mount Saint Vincent. With the loss during
the Mount’s third game in three days, the
Dolphins finish the 2005-06 season with an 8-17
record.
2/20/2006 -
Mount Saint Vincent senior Andrea
DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters) was
named to both the Skyline Conference and
PrestoSports/MBWA Honor Rolls this week for
Women’s Basketball after averaging 19.5
points, 2.5 assists, and 2.5 steals during a 1-1
stretch for the Mount in which they defeated the
College of Saint Elizabeth in the Hudson Valley
Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Semifinals
on Saturday and lost to St. Joseph’s
(Brooklyn) in the HVWAC Championship Game on
Sunday.
2/19/2006 - It wasn’t the
silence on the Mount Saint Vincent bench that measured
the magnitude of the loss, nor was it the long faces or
the tears. The sadness on Sunday afternoon was not
because it was St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) celebrating
the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference
(HVWAC) Tournament Championship, and not the Mount as had
happened a year ago. Sunday’s 71-59 defeat was
crushing for one reason and one reason only …
Mount Saint Vincent spent a majority of the game
performing as the better team. But has happened on six
other occasions during the 2005-06 campaign, an explosive
start to the game that included a halftime lead turned
into disaster down the stretch, as St. Joseph’s
outscored the Dolphins 20-9 during the final 8:49 of
play, and the Bears walked away with the HVWAC Tournament
crown, 71-59.
2/18/2006 - Senior Andrea
DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters) scored a
game-high 18 points, and fellow seniors Laura
Bucci (Irvington, NY/Our Lady of Victory) and
Lauren DeRosa (Hawthorne, NY/Westlake
HS) each netted double-doubles as the Mount Saint Vincent
Women’s Basketball team blew a tight first half
wide open during the final 20 min utes of play and
advanced to the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic
Conference (HVWAC) Championship Game with an 89-54 win
over the College of Saint Elizabeth in the HVWAC
Semifinals on Saturday night at the Pratt Institute in
Brooklyn, N.Y.
2/15/2006 -
Mount Saint Vincent senior Andrea
DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters) is
capping one of the finest careers in Women’s
Basketball history, while freshman Drew
Gomes (Thomaston, CT/Thomaston HS) is
in the midst of starting one. Both of their unique
and outstanding talents were on full display last
week as the duo enjoyed a terrific stretch of games
in leading the Mount to a 1-2 record that clinched
the #2 seed in the upcoming Hudson Valley
Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC) playoffs.
For their efforts, DiNizo was named HVWAC Player of
the Week, while Gomes earned Rookie of the
Week honors, marking the first time this season that
Mount Saint Vincent has swept the HVWAC weekly
awards for Women’s Basketball.
2/11/2006 -
Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Basketball seniors
Andrea DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor,
NY/Masters) and Laura Bucci
(Irvington, NY/Our Lady of Victory) entered their
final career regular season game on Saturday hoping
to make it a day to remember. 40 minutes later, both
lived up to their hopes and then some, having
enjoyed one of the finest performances of their
outstanding careers. Against the College of New
Rochelle, DiNizo scored a career-high 29 points, and
Bucci netted her fourth career double-double with 10
points and a season-high 11 assists as the Dolphins
routed CNR, 81-44 during a game played at Sarah
Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York.
2/9/2006 - 3,482 points, 1,633
rebounds, 752 assists, and 564 steals later, the four
senior members of the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s
Basketball played in front of the home crowd one final
time on Thursday night after nearly 100 career starts
apiece. And while the result was the Mount's third
straight loss, a 77-58 defeat to Centennial
Conference powerhouse, Muhlenberg College, the mood was
not dampened by the scoreboard as Senior Night saw all
four members of the Class of 2006 shine. However,
while the night was for the seniors, it was a rookie
who stole the show.
2/7/2006 - During an outstanding
four-year career, Mount Saint Vincent senior
Laura Bucci (Irvington, NY/Our Lady of
Victory) has emerged as one of the finest point guards in
the history of the Mount’s Women’s Basketball
program, joining an elite group of fine point guards to
play for the Dolphins. Last year, she helped lead Mount
Saint Vincent to the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic
Conference (HVWAC) Tournament Championship, and earned
All-Conference honors from both the HVWAC and Skyline
Conference as well after leading the Skyline in assists.
2/7/2006 -
Senior Meagan Fitzpatrick (Yonkers,
NY/Our Lady of Victory) scored a team-high 17 points
and added 13 rebound for her third double-double of
the 2005-06 season, and sophomore Kaitlin
Burud (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook HS) added
seven points, nine rebounds, and a game-high three
steals, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s
Basketball team got off to a sluggish start and were
never able to fully recover, losing 66-48 to
USMMA-Kings Point during a game played at Mount
Saint Vincent.
2/4/2006 - Senior Laura
Bucci (Irvington, NY/Our Lady of Victory) scored
a game and season-high 21 points, and fellow senior
Andrea DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Our
Lady of Victory) added 11 points, six rebounds, and six
assists, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s
Basketball team loss to Stevens, 70-57 on Saturday during
a game played at Mount Saint Vincent. With the loss, the
Dolphins fall to 6-13 on the season, and 2-9 in Skyline
Conference play.
1/31/2006 - Sophomore
Kaitlin Burud (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook HS)
came within a hair of a quadruple-double, fellow
sophomore Edeana Martinez (Bronx, NY/St.
Catherine’s) added a double-double, and five
Dolphins scored in double digits as the Mount Saint
Vincent Women’s Basketball team exploded for a
99-42 win over Yeshiva on Tuesday night at Mount Saint
Vincent.
1/30/2006 -
Mount Saint Vincent senior Andrea
DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters) was
named to the Skyline Conference Honor Roll this week
after one of her finest weeks of play this season.
The shooting guard was instrumental in leading the
Mount to a 2-1 week that included a dramatic,
final-minute 65-64 win over Manhattanville on
Tuesday, and an incredible effort during a 67-45
loss to Mount Saint Mary on Saturday in a game that
was far closer than the score indicated. For the
week, she averaged 10.7 points and 4.3 assists per
game, included within the statistics were
several clutch shots to help make the week a very
successful one for the Dolphins.
1/28/2006 -
Their defense was much improved, their rebounding
more effective, and their intensity matched an
opponent that has been nothing short of a dynasty in
Skyline Conference play. And when they headed to the
locker room at halftime trailing only 42-34 to Mount
Saint Mary on Saturday, the Mount Saint Vincent
Women’s Basketball found themselves in an
all-too-familiar position of going toe-to-toe with
one of the best teams in the Skyline Conference
during the first half of play. Ultimately, as has
happened throughout the 2005-06 season, the second
half proved to be the Mount’s downfall, and
Mount Saint Mary earned a hard-fought 67-45 win over
the Dolphins for their 62nd straight Skyline
Conference win … but it wasn’t easy.
1/26/2006 - At the beginning of
the 2005-06 season, Mount Saint Vincent first year Head
Coach Ed Ryder raved about the defensive play of
sophomore Kaitlin Burud (Red Hook,
NY/Red Hook HS). He considered her among the team’s
best defensive players, and her team leading 74
steals a year ago were proof of Ryder’s assessment.
17 games into the season, Burud has evolved into far more
than a defensive specialist.
1/24/2006 - When the smoke
cleared and the game was finally over, Laura
Bucci (Irvington, NY/Our Lady of Victory)
breathed a sigh of relief so strong it nearly
brought the house down as much as the performance she had
just exhibited. When the chips were down on Tuesday
night and the Skyline Conference portion of Mount Saint
Vincent’s season was on the line, Bucci did what
seniors are supposed to do … she turned in the
performance of her career. And with a dramatic 65-64 win
over Manhattanville, there is life in Riverdale once
again, and a trip to the Skyline Conference post-season
is not out of the question for the Mount Saint Vincent
Women’s Basketball team.
1/23/2006 -
Four different Dolphins scored nine points apiece,
and senior Meagan Fitzpatrick
(Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of Victory) and freshman
Ashley Farrow (Ocean, NJ/Ocean
Township HS) each grabbed a team-high seven
rebounds, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s
Basketball team fell to 3-11 with an 86-49 loss to
Mount Saint Mary on Saturday at Mount Saint Mary.
1/19/2006 - Mount Saint Vincent
Head Women’s Basketball Coach Ed Ryder finally
figured out the formula to make his team tick. It took a
little while, but if the last 24 hours of his coaching
career prove that he has it all figured out, and the
Mount seems poised to enjoy their first extended period
of prosperity during the 2005-06 season. It’s
simple really, when every single player on the Mount
Saint Vincent roster scores at least one point in a game,
the Dolphins play their very best.
1/18/2006 -
Teams mired in eight-game losing streaks just
don’t do the things the Mount Saint Vincent
Women’s Basketball team continues to do
whenever they take the court. Teams in such a
“slump” don’t dive after loose
balls, they don’t battle for rebounds, and
they certainly never come back from double-digit
deficits to play the best teams on their schedule
close. But, Mount Saint Vincent is doing just that.
Instead of pouting in the face of defeat, this is a
team that has come together and continues to go down
fighting. Wednesday night was the perfect example of
how the Mount refuses to let another team have it
easy.
1/14/2006 -
There are two sides to every story, and while the
story of the 2005-06 Mount Saint Vincent
Women’s Basketball team includes a current
seven-game losing streak, the other side to that
story is thus far is that they continue to battle
and compete with the very best their schedule has to
offer. Saturday continued the trend as the Dolphins
enjoyed another solid defensive effort and spent the
entire game nearly dead-even with a deeper and
bigger Old Westbury foe, but the Mount ultimately
lost their seventh consecutive game, 54-47 to the
Panthers.
1/12/2006 - It was a back and
forth game that featured the grit, intensity, and energy
that is Skyline Conference basketball, and it even
required an extra session. However, despite an incredible
effort to force overtime, the Mount Saint Vincent
Women’s Basketball team ultimately lost their sixth
straight game, 77-68 to Manhattanville in a game played
at Manhattanville College.
1/10/2006 - On paper, it had all
of the makings of a blowout. The Mount Saint Vincent
Women’s Basketball team looked across at their
opponent during warm-ups on Tuesday night, and saw an
opponent with exactly double the number of players on
their roster than the Dolphins had. Not only was 11th
ranked NYU deep, they had size, speed, and a 10-1 record
to boot. But somebody forgot to tell Mount Saint Vincent
that they weren’t supposed to win on paper, and for
more than a half, it seemed as if the Dolphins were going
to pull one of the biggest upsets across the country this
season.
1/7/2006 - It was a day when
everything went right for the Mount Saint Vincent
Women’s Basketball team. Turnovers were few and far
between, the Dolphins outrebounded their opponent, 60-46,
and found themselves at the free throw line nearly twice
as many times. But poor shooting proved to spoil a season
sweep of Centenary by Mount Saint Vincent as the Dolphins
squandered a 37-36 halftime lead, shooting only 17% from
the floor during the second half of play and missing
several key free throws as Centenary rallied to beat
Mount Saint Vincent, 64-55 during a game played at
Centenary.
1/4/2006 -
Nearly an entire month since last taking the court,
the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Basketball
team got off to a sluggish start during their
Wednesday night encounter with Skyline Conference
foe, St. Joseph’s (LI), and the slow start
doomed the Dolphins as they lost their third
straight game, 60-44 to the Golden Eagles during a
game played at St. Joseph’s. With the loss,
Mount Saint Vincent falls to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in
the Skyline Conference.
12/13/2005 -
(Riverdale, NY) - For the last four years, Mount
Saint Vincent senior Meagan
Fitzpatrick (Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of
Victory) has played for three Head Coaches, three
different systems, and has undertaken an infinite
number of roles within these systems because of her
versatility on the court and tenacity during team
preparation that has made her a vital piece of a
puzzle that has consistently challenged for the
Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference
(HVWAC) Championship and Skyline Conference
post-season.
12/9/2005 -
Senior Meagan Fitzpatrick (Yonkers,
NY/Our Lady of Victory) had a team-high nine points
and seven rebounds, and freshman Drew
Gomes (Thomaston, CT/Thomaston HS) added
eight points and six rebounds, but the Mount Saint
Vincent Women’s Basketball team lost their
second straight game, 54-44 to the Stevens Institute
of Technology in a Skyline Conference game played at
Stevens.
12/3/2005 - It
took only four games for Head Coach Ed Ryder to make
his impact felt as the new leader of the Mount Saint
Vincent Women’s Basketball team. In front of
an excited home crowd for opening day 2005-06,
senior Andrea DiNizo (Cortlandt
Manor, NY/Masters) scored a season-high 22
points, and fellow senior Meagan
Fitzpatrick (Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of
Victory) added seven points and a career-high 15
rebounds as the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s
Basketball team defeated Skyline Conference foe,
Centenary College, for the first time in three
years, 59-45.
11/21/2005 -
Senior Andrea DiNizo (Cortlandt
Manor, NY/Masters School) scored a season-high 18
points, and freshman Lanette Brannon (Woodside,
NY/St. John’s Prep) added a career-high 15
points on 6 for 7 shooting, as the Mount Saint
Vincent Women’s Basketball team crushed
Marymount, 83-37, in their Hudson Valley
Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC) opener.
11/20/2005 -
Three Dolphins scored in double figures, and the
Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Basketball team
engaged in a furious second-half comeback, but the
Dolphins ultimately fell to Clarkson, 52-48 during
the Consolation Game of the Hunter College Tip-off
Tournament.
11/18/2005 -
Senior Lauren DeRosa (Hawthorne,
NY/Westlake HS) scored a team-high 10 points, and
Meagan Fitzpatrick (Yonkers, NY/Our
Lady of Victory) added five points and a team-high
eight rebounds, but the Mount Saint Vincent
Women’s Basketball team opened the 2005-06
season with a 64-46 loss to Hunter College during
the opening round of the Hunter College Tip-off
Tournament.
