| Filipp Bochkov nailed four three pointers on his way to a career-high 12 points. |
The Dolphins tied the score once early on Thursday when Bochkov drilled his first of four three pointers to pull the Dolphins to a 3-3 tie with 17:19 left in the first half. The 6-5 rookie canned another triple with 12:45 left in the half to pull the Mount to within 13-12, but that would be as close as they would be the rest of the night.
The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to double figures with 8:03 left before the break on a Trey Black triple and extended the lead to 24 twice in the final 2:10 of the period. The Dolphins used a pair of Eric Van Tine (Hawthorne, N.J.) buckets in the last 1:04 to get to within 46-26 heading into the locker room.
The Dolphins were outscored 22-6 in the paint in the opening twenty minutes and 15-0 in points of off turnovers. Three St. Joseph’s players had nine points in the opening frame with Chris Jimenez going 3-5 from behind the arc.
Mount Saint Vincent got two quick baskets to open the second half to get the deficit down to 16 points, but St. Joseph’s would prove to be too much as it stretched its advantage back to 21 on a Jimenez layup with 14:36 left in regulation. The lead would swell to a game-high 29 points on a Steven Velazquez bucket in the final 1:08, before they closed the contest with the final 26 point advantage.
St. Joseph’s dominated in nearly every facet on Thursday, except free-throw shooting as it went just 10-25 from the line. But the Eagles did hold a 20-8 edge in second chance points after outrebounding the Dolphins 20-9 on the offensive glass. They also held the edge in points in the paint 42-24 and turned 23 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers into 30 points.
Jimenez led four Golden Eagles in double-figures with 17 points on 6-12 shooing overall and 5-9 shooing from three point range. He also handed out three assists and swiped a game-high five steals. Trey Black finished with a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds as St. Joseph’s shot 43.8-percent from the field.
Bochkov finished the contest 4-6 overall from the floor and 4-5 from long range to go along with a career-best 10 rebounds. He also finished with an assist and a blocked shot. J.R. Downey (Highland Falls, N.Y.) had a strong effort off the bench for the Mount with a career-high 12 points to go along with a rebound and a steal.
Van Tine also had a solid effort for the Mount with 12 points, two assists and four rebounds. Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounded out the quartet with 12 points and also added two steals and three rebounds.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 5-4 overall on the season and to 2-3 against Skyline Conference opponents. The Dolphins will be off on Friday before hosting NYU-POLY on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off at the Sharp Center is set for 3:00 p.m.
