Montclair St. never trailed in the contest and the score was tied just one time early in the first half. After Jamie Ericson opened the scoring for the Red Hawks with a three pointer, Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, N.Y.) drew the Dolphins even with her first of two triples in the contest.
After the Koerner bucket Montclair St. scored 20 of the next 30 points to open a double-digit lead and then extended its lead to 17 points with just under six minutes left in the frame on a Catherine Cristino jumper. The Mount would score the final four points of the half to cut its deficit to 38-27 heading into halftime.
Montclair St. converted four more three pointers in the opening stanza then the Mount and shot and even 50-percent from behind the arc in the first twenty minutes. The Dolphins shot just 38.7-percent overall from the field in the half and just 2-10 from long distance.
Jen Mocanu (Middletown, N.J.) canned a three pointer to open the scoring in the second half to bring the Mount to within eight points, but the Red Hawks quickly responded with nine of the next 12 tallies to push the lead back to 14 points.
Following that spurt by Montclair St. the Dolphins could not chip their deficit past 10 points and the Red Hawks again pushed their lead to 17 just under three minutes left in regulation time.
The Red Hawks had 12 of its 13 players who saw action in the contest find the scoring column, with Ericson leading the way with 13 points. She was 5-10 from the floor overall and also grabbed six rebounds. For the game, Montclair St. shot just over 47-percent from the floor and a red hot 52.4-percent from three point range.
Heesemann finished 7-9 from the floor for Mount Saint Vincent on her way to the game-high point total. She also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked a shot. Koerner and Mocanu each posted 12 points for the Dolphins and Lauren Percodani (Staten Island, N.Y.) handed out a game-high four assists.
The Dolphins struggled shooting the ball from behind the arc on Wednesday, making just three triples in 18 attempts. They were also just 8-16 from the free-throw line in the tilt. Montclair held the edge on the glass 39-30 and assisted on 20 of its 26 field goals.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 4-3 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to action for a pair of games this weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. as part of the Cruzin’ Classic. The Mount will take on Millikin on Saturday, before closing out the trip against Curry on Sunday.
