Working in partnership with the Wave Hill Garden & Cultural Center in Riverdale, the College of Mount Saint Vincent is offering a unique opportunity for undergraduate education majors interested in spending a Semester in New York on the College’s Riverdale campus and also incorporating an internship at Wave Hill, centered on the educational activities and programs of the Garden & Cultural Center.
This academic program includes a 9 credit internship at Wave Hill and a 3 credit methods course in education coordinated with the internship program.
Students in this semester long internship program will explore and develop methods for urban environmental education from a philosophical and practical perspective. The program is offered to those undergraduates who are seeking to become certified classroom teachers or environmental educators. Interns will become aware of new and exciting ways to tap into their students’ interests while complimenting classroom needs. They also become familiar with Wave Hill’s teaching model that investigates the natural world through inquiry leading to newfound knowledge. A mini-curriculum will be developed using methods learned in this class. Students will gain an understanding of cognitive, social, and emotional intelligence; differentiated learning modalities; and science content. Students will have the opportunity to individually or as a group incorporate their own personal interests in this course.
