In his second season as head coach Brian Nigro ’00 is looking to improve on the team’s 12-14 finish last season. The Dolphins posted nine wins in the Skyline Conference which was good enough for the sixth seed in the league tournament a season ago. Back from last season’s squad are senior Nick DiMaggio (Croton, N.Y.) who led the team in scoring and assists with 17.6 points per game and 3.5 helpers per night. Junior Dino Johnson (Amsterdam, N.Y.) returns after averaging 12.5 points per night.
The Match-Up: Mount Saint Vincent will open a new season and the Peter Jay Sharp Center on November 16 when it hosts cross town rival Lehman.
The Series: The two schools are seperated by just five miles. Over the past six seasons the Lightning and Dolphins have squared off four times with each school coming away with a pair of wins. The Mount’s last win was a 81-76 win during the 2007-08 season.
2008-09 In Review: Under the first year head coach Brian Nigro ‘00 the Dolphins improved their win total by three and posted a 12-14 overall record and a 9-9 mark against league opponents. Mount Saint Vincent returned to the Skyline Conference Tournament a season ago, but was downed by Maritime in the quarterfinal round.
Mount Saint Vincent will return four starters from last season’s team, including leading scorer Nick DiMaggio. In 2008-09, DiMaggio averaged 17.6 points per game and also led the team by posting 3.5 assists per game. He was a Second Team All-Skyline Conference performer in his first season at the Mount.
Also back in 2009-10 in junior shooter Dino Johnson who posted 12.5 points per night for the Dolphins and was tied with DiMaggio for the team lead in steals with 36.
New Season, New Home: The Dolphins will move from their old home court into the brand new Peter Jay Sharp Center when they host cross-town rival Lehman on November 16.
Meet The Newcomers: Althoight the Mount lost just one senior to graduation last season, the Dolphins will welcome nine newcomers for the 2009-10 season. The new group includes freshmen Valentin Arranz, Filipp Bochkov, Sean Caputo, Shaquille Cunningham, Carson Miller, Geroge Naldjieff and Steven Oliver. The other new faces are sophomore James Walker and junior J.R. Downey.
Your 2009-10 Captains: Head Coach Brian Nigro ‘00 has announced the senior Nick DiMaggio and sophomore Keiran Halton will serve as the team’s captains for the 2009-10 season.
Dolphins Travel To West Point: On December 19 Mount Saint Vincent will travel to West Point, N.Y. to take on Division I opponent Army. The game will mark the first game against a Division I opponent for the Mount since it tussled with Marist on November 25, 1989.
All-Skyline Recognition: Senior Nick DiMaggio was named Second Team All-Skyline Conference following the 2008-09 season, hist first with the Mount. That marked the first time a member of the Mount Saint Vincent had erned post-season league honors since the 2005-06 season when James Mooney was named to the league’s First Team.
Skyline Gets Bigger: The Skyline Conference will welcome Sage to the league in 2009-10 as its 10th member. The Dolphins will square off with the Gators on January 5 on the road and then on February 9 at the Sharp Center.
Skyline Goes National: The Skyline Conference had two teams take part in last season’s NCAA Division III Tournament. Farmingdale St. advanced to the Elite Eight after earning an at-large bid to the event.
Coach Nigro In The Record Books: In the latest NCAA Record Book Nigro stands in 14th place all-time in Division III for assists (674) and assists per game (6.8).
Why Dolphins?: During the early 1980's, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics adopted "Dolphins" as the official Mount Saint Vincent mascot with the ideal set forth that our Student-Athletes would exhibit the traits of a Dolphin in their athletics endeavors. Since mythical times, the Dolphin has been considered the most intelligent of water-dwelling animals because of their ability to communicate via a language. On January 29, 2005, at halftime of the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Basketball game against Manhattanville College, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics unveiled its new Brand Identity and Logo. The selection of the new Brand was the latest step in the evolution of the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphin.
Skyline against Division I: Four Skyline schools will compete agains Division I opponents during the 2009-10 season. Farmingdale St. will travel to Hofstra, Mount Saint Mary will head to Stony Brook, NYU-POLY will take on NJIT0and the Dolphins will tussle with Army on December 19.
85 And Counting: Heading into the season opener on November 16 against Lehman the Dolphins have made at least one three-point field goal in 85 straight games. The last time the Mount did not convert a three-pointer was January 14, 2006 against Mount Saint Mary.
DiMaggio And Double-Figures: Senior Nick DiMaggio scored in double-figures in 22 of the 24 games he appeared in last season, including 11 of the final 12 games of the season.
100 Points Equals ?: Mount Saint Vincent scored 100 points in a game four times last season, but won just three of those games. The loss was a 120-109 overtime thrill against Albertus Magnus on December 4.
Even with the Advantage: Last season the Dolphins outrebounded their opponent six times and posted a 3-3 record in those games.
Finishing: After outscoring their opponents by 17 in the first half a season ago, Mount Saint Vincent struggled in the second half and overtime, being outscored by 98.
Homestands: The Dolphins play no more then two consecuative games at home until February 9, 11 and 12 and finish the regular season with four of their final five games at the Sharp Center.
1,000 Club: Mount Saint Vincent has 13 members in its 1,000 point club, including assistant coach Martin Zivanovic who netted 1,001 career points in his time with the Dolphins.
