Women’s Volleyball Drops Four At Grinnell Invitational, Reynes Named To All-Tournament Team
Sophomore averaged 6.69 digs per set over four matches in Iowa

Renee Reynes was named to the All-Tournament team at the Grinnell Invitational.
Riverdale, N.Y. – After winning its first two matches of the 2009 season, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Volleyball team dropped four contests this past weekend as part of the Grinnell College Invitational in Grinnell, Iowa. The Dolphins were swept by both William Penn University and Grinnell on Friday night and then fell to Rockford College and Monmouth on Saturday afternoon by scores of 3-1 and 3-0 respectively. Sophomore Renee Reynes (Bronx, N.Y.) was honored following the event by being named to the All-Tournament Team.

Mount Saint Vincent dropped the contest to William Penn in its first match of the tournament by scores of 10-25, 13-25 and 5-25. Jessica Williams (Cornwall, N.Y.) paced the Dolphins with five kills and also chipped in with five defensive digs. Reynes led the Mount with 21 digs in the match, while freshman Kristine DeMassi (Bay Ridge, N.Y.) lifted 13. Bridget Leonard (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with eight assists.

Against host Grinnell, Williams again led the squad with seven kills and joined Reynes in double-figures in digs with 10. She rounded out a solid all-around effort with a pair of service aces. Reynes led all players with 18 digs in the match and also finished with a pair of assists and a service ace for the Dolphins. Leonard was again the team leader in assists with 14 and also contributed six digs and two aces. The Pioneers took the match by scores of 14-25, 11-25, and 17-25.

On Saturday, Mount Saint Vincent opened the second day of competition with a 3-1 loss to Rockford (Ill.). Scores of the match were 16-25, 26-24, 8-25 and 9-25 in favor of Rockford. The match was the best of the weekend for the Dolphins as it featured four players with at least 11 digs. Reynes again led the way with 25, with DeMassi adding 16, Leonard posting 15 and Irma Nepomuceno (Bronx, N.Y.) lifting 11.

Lisa O’Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) and Nepomuceno each finished off seven kills to lead the team, while Williams finished with six winners to go along with five digs. Leonard handed out 20 assists and Esmeralda Morales (Bronx, N.Y.) collected a pair of total blocks.

The Dolphins closed out the tournament by falling to Monmouth (Ill.) by scores of 19-25, 14-25 and 7-25. Williams again paced the Dolphins with five winners, while O’Shea chipped in with four kills for the Mount. Reynes closed out a strong four match stretch with 23 digs to lead the team and Leonard handed out 14 assists.

Reynes earned All-Tournament honors after finishing with two kills, three assists, two service aces and 87 digs over the four matches. For the tournament she averaged 6.69 digs per set for the Dolphins.

At 2-4 overall on the season, the Dolphins will look to get back into the win column on Tuesday night when they host the College of New Rochelle. The match with the Blue Angels is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Hayes Gymnasium.
