Admission and Degree Requirements

Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission into the Graduate Nursing Program must meet the following criteria:

·  Hold a bachelor's degree from a National League for Nursing (NLN) or Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited college or institution*
·  Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools must have their nursing transcripts evaluated by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools
·  Have earned an undergraduate cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0**
·  Submit a completed application and fee with two references, a copy of their New York State R.N. license, and all official undergraduate transcripts
·  Complete an admission interview with the Director or Coordinator of the Graduate Nursing Program
·  Have successfully completed undergraduate courses in nursing research and elementary statistics
·  Pass the English Essay Examination administered by the College of Mount Saint Vincent

*Applicants who do not possess a baccalaureate degree in Nursing must make an appointment with the Director of the Nursing Program prior to submission of an application. RN's with a baccalaureate in another discipline are expected to demonstrate the competencies of nurses with a Baccalaureate in Nursing.

** A student with an undergraduate grade point average below a 3.0 may enroll as a non-matriculated student in the four core nursing courses. If the student achieves a 3.0 grade point average in these courses, he/she may matriculate into the program.

Additional Admissions Information

Under special circumstances, registered nurses with degrees in a field other than nursing may be enrolled in the graduate nursing program. Admission requirements include:

·  A current RN license;
·  A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
·  A completed application and fee
·  An admissions interview
·  Completion of  17 credits of undergraduate courses 
·  General Chemistry                     4 credits
·  Elementary Statistics                 3 credits
·  Nursing Research and Theory  3 credits
·  Health Assessment                   3 credits
·  Community Component              4 credits (Includes 5 weeks of lectures and 60 community clinical hours) 
·  Satisfactory passage of the English essay exam

Degree Requirements

The graduate nursing program offers four specializations: Adult Nurse Practitioner (40 credits), Family Nurse Practitioner (43 credits), Nursing Education (32 credits) and Nursing Administration (36 Credits). View the graduate nursing program's curriculum and course descriptions.
