Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Department of Athletics held its annual Varsity Awards Banquet on Thursday evening where each program and senior was recognized. Each of the Mount’s 15 varsity programs handed out their respective awards at the event and four student-athletes were honored with department wide honors. In addition the Mount Saint Vincent Sports Medicine Department handed out three awards of its own.

Sophomore David Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) and senior Jessica Lorenzen (Denmark, Maine) were both honored as the department’s Scholar Athletes Awards. Guerrero was a standout on the Men’s Volleyball team that captured the program’s first ever Skyline Conference Championship in 2009. For the season he registered 192 kills and averaged 3.25 kills per set. He also lifted 139 digs on the season and was third on the squad in service aces with 31.

Lorenzen was a standout on the 2008 Women’s Tennis team at Mount Saint Vincent. Over the course of the season she posted a 9-3 record in singles competition, including a 5-1 mark in conference play. Lorenzen also posted three more victories in doubles competition for the Mount, primarily out of the second position.

Sophomore Men’s Lacrosse player Chris Beerman (Floral Park, N.Y.) was recognized with the Chuck Mancuso Dedication Award on Thursday for his efforts in the department both on and off the field. This award is handed out annually to the individual who demonstrates dedication to his or her team and to the department as a whole. On the field Beerman was a mainstay on defense for the Men’s Lacrosse squad and contributed a goal and 18 groundballs for the Dolphins in 2009. Off the field Beerman was willing to do whatever was needed to help the department in game day management. He assisted in game day operations all year for the Mount from working the scoreboard at home basketball games to securing event staff for other home events.

For the third consecutive year College of Mount Saint Vincent junior Karen Laurent (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) has been honored with the Sister Magdalen Horsting Spirit Award. The Sister Magdalen Horsting Spirit Sward is handed out each year to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of the Dolphins both on and off the field. Laurent is a two sport athlete at the Mount but also finds time to serve as a Men’s Basketball team manager and is at as many home events as she can cheering and supporting her fellow student-athletes. During the Women’s Tennis season this past fall Laurent posted a 7-6 singles record overall, including a 6-6 mark at the second position. She also serves as one of two goalies on the Women’s Lacrosse team at Mount Saint Vincent. To date in 2009 she has seen action in 11 games and has made 54 saves for a team that has posted a 9-6 record heading into Saturday’s ECAC Tournament game at Stevens.

The Sports Medicine Department also handed out three awards on Thursday evening to recognize a student-athlete and dedicated student workers. The Hudson Valley Bone and Joint Surgeons Comeback Player of the Year Award was received by Men’s Volleyball Player T.J. Pufahl (Bethpage, N.Y.). After suffering a season ending injury during the 2008 season, Pufahl earned First Team All-Skyline Conference honors and led the Mount to its first ever Skyline Championship. He was also named the Most Valuable Player of the Skyline Championship.

Shannon Beysel (Warwick, N.Y.) received the Mount Saint Vincent Student Athletic Trainer of the Year award from Head Athletic Trainer Barima Yeboah.
