2/20/2007 - As USMMA-Kings Point departs the Skyline Conference for the Landmark Conference at the end of the 2006-07 academic year, they will do so knowing that they will never, ever win a Skyline Conference Women's Basketball Championship. Mount Saint Vincent made sure of that on Tuesday night, in dramatic fashion, as a rally during the final minutes of the first overtime session gave the Dolphins a thrilling 63-58 win over the Mariners in front of one of the largest crowds to ever witness a Women's Basketball game at Mount Saint Vincent. 2/18/2007 - They've been a Cinderella Story all season long ... a feel good season during which a young team with modest expectations has overcome every challenge sent their way. Picked to finish near the bottom of the Skyline Conference standings, they ended the 2006-07 season with a 9-7 conference record and earned the #4 seed in the Skyline playoffs and a post-season home game. In Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) play, they were expected to finish behind a St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) team that returned a lot of experience and talent from a squad that won the conference a year ago. During a string of wins and outstanding play, the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team has not only met their expectations for the season, they surpassed every single one of them, and seemed to be living a charmed life as a team without a senior on the roster that developed into a powerhouse almost overnight. But on Sunday evening, during the HVWAC Championship Game at the Pratt Institute, it all almost came crashing down. After blowing a 14-point second half lead to #3 Saint Elizabeth and seeing the score tied with mere minutes to play, Mount Saint Vincent proved to have the meddle of a champion once again, and what could have easily become their lowest point of the season became their finest moment. And with a 59-54 win, Mount Saint Vincent captured their second HVWAC Tournament Championship during a three-year span, and swept the HVWAC season for the first time since long before a single member of the team even thought of coming to play at Mount Saint Vincent. 2/17/2007 - The only disappointment on Saturday evening for the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team is that their attempt to reach the top of the mountain with their second Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Championship during the last three seasons will not include a match-up with HVWAC arch-rival St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), whom the Dolphins have met in the HVWAC finals during each of the last three seasons. Otherwise, Saturday night was as close to the perfect game as the Mount could have played. 2/14/2007 - Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball freshman Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood HS) was named the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Rookie of the Week this week after leading the Mount to one of the most important wins in the history of the program, a 59-26 win over the College of New Rochelle on Wednesday that allowed the Dolphins to claim the 2006-07 HVWAC Regular Season Championship. 2/12/2007 - And the playoffs have begun for the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team. Entering Monday's showdown with Farmingdale State, the Mount found themselves in third place in the Skyline Conference standings, a firm two games ahead of fourth place USMMA-Kings Point, and only two games behind the visiting Rams. A Dolphin win over a Farmingdale State team that defeated the Mount in overtime in December would not only clinch a playoff home game, but also put Mount Saint Vincent in position to potentially overtake the Rams in the final standings. 2/10/2007 - If the pursuit of a championship is manifested not by performance during the good times, but instead rising to the occasion in the face of adversity, on Saturday afternoon, the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team proved themselves worthy of contender status in the Skyline Conference Championship hunt. With three starters out of the game having collected their fifth fouls, Head Coach Ed Ryder was forced to turn to his bench to hold off a pesky St. Joseph's (LI) effort as the Golden Eagles desperately tried a comeback during a game that was once a landslide Dolphin advantage. 2/7/2007 - When Ed Ryder took the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball Head Coaching position 16 months ago, he spoke of a plan that would one day bring conference championships to the Mount. 2/5/2007 - Freshman Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park HS) scored 16 points and junior Kaitlin Burud (Red Hook, NY/ Red Hook HS) added seven points and a game-high six assists, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team was edged, 58-52 by the Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday during a game played at Stevens. 2/5/2007 - Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball freshman Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park HS) was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week this week after yet another outstanding stretch of play during a 1-1 stretch for the Dolphins. Mount Saint Vincent lost to seven-time defending Skyline Conference Champion Mount Saint Mary, 72-58 on Thursday before one of their finest efforts of the season during a 76-61 win over Centenary on Thursday. With the Centenary win, the Mount is now 11-7 overall, 7-5 in Skyline Conference play, and has a two-game lead over USMMA-Kings Point for fourth place in the conference and has all but wrapped up a post-season home game. 2/1/2007 - To illustrate how far the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team has come in an incredibly short period of time, entering Thursday night's home contest with Centenary College, a Skyline Conference playoff berth was not in question as the Mount clinched a trip to the post-season several days ago. Yet somehow, just qualifying for the post-season was not good enough despite the fact that the Dolphins' only route to the Skyline Conference playoffs during the last two seasons was a play-in game that no longer exists. A win on Thursday night, and Mount Saint Vincent would open up a two-game lead on fourth place in the upcoming playoffs, and virtually assure themselves of a post-season home game. Indeed, there was a lot at stake as Centenary came to town for the second time this season on Thursday, as the Cyclones (5-6 Skyline Conference) had an opportunity to draw even with the Mount (6-5 Skyline Conference) in the standings, and make the final two weeks of conference play a sprint to the finish. But the sense of urgency belonged to the Mount for nearly the entire 40 minutes of play as the Dolphins opened up a 10-point halftime lead and never looked back en route to a 76-61 win over Centenary. 1/29/2007 - Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball freshman Lauren Percodani (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) has been named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week after a terrific stretch in leading the Mount to a 2-0 record during the week and four straight wins overall. In earning the conference's top rookie honors, Percodani becomes the third Dolphin to be so honored this season as Rookie of the Week. 1/27/2007 - Saturday's Women's Basketball game between Mount Saint Vincent and Old Westbury represented one of the biggest Skyline Conference match-ups of the 2006-07 season. With the Dolphins sitting in fifth place at 5-4 in conference play and the Panthers a game behind at 4-5, Saturday's matinee at Mount Saint Vincent could have meant either a shot at a post-season home game with a Mount Saint Vincent win, or a struggle just to make the post-season should the Mount be defeated. Old Westbury had already beaten Skyline Conference powerhouse Farmingdale State once, Manhattanville twice and had several solid games against some of the conference's premiere teams to prove that a Mount Saint Vincent win would not be an easy task. 1/27/2007 - If anybody required hard evidence that the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball program has a long and proud tradition, all they had to do was attend the 2007 Alumnae Game held on Saturday, Jan. 27 prior to Mount Saint Vincent's home game against SUNY Old Westbury. Membership from classes spanning the last 20 years returned to the Mount Saint Vincent gymnasium to relive great memories, create new ones, and enjoy a moment in the Mount Saint Vincent sun one more time. 1/26/2007 - After one of the finest weeks of her brief collegiate athletics career, Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball freshman Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park HS) began her second semester of college on Monday in a manner typical of any college freshman. She went to class, did her school-work, attended basketball practice, and participated in just about everything a typical college freshman would expect to undertake during the first day of classes for the spring semester. Little did she know that by the third day of classes, her week would become anything but typical as on Wednesday she became one of the most highly honored athletes in Mount Saint Vincent history. On Monday, she was named to the PrestoSports/Metropolitan Basketball Writer's Association (MBWA) Honor Roll, an honor chosen from among the hundreds of college basketball players in the New York City Metropolitan area. On Tuesday, Heesemann was named Rookie of the Week by the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC). By Tuesday night, it seemed like the week couldn't get any better for the rookie forward. 1/24/2007 - For Head Coach Ed Ryder and the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team, Wednesday night was two hours worth of deja vus when they travelled to Manhattanville College for their second meeting of the season. Much like their first meeting, a Dec. 2 69-61 Mount Saint Vincent win, the Dolphins overcame a pesky Manhattanville squad and built a seemingly insurmountable double-digit second half lead. And like the last meeting, Manhattanville came storming back to make a game. Fortunately for the Dolphins, lightning did strike twice, the Mount rallied late to sweep the 2006-07 season series with Manhattanville, 71-62. With the win, the Mount has now eclipsed last-season's win total as they are now 9-6 overall and 5-4 in Skyline Conference play. 1/20/2007 - The fact that the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team defeated St. Joseph's (LI), 62-49 on Saturday was significant for more reasons than one: The Mount has now won three out of its last four games after a three-game losing streak to open 2007. The Dolphins are now 4-4 in Skyline Conference play after finishing 2-10 in the conference a year ago, and are also very much in the thick of things for a Skyline Conference playoff berth. And, most importantly, despite a starting line-up consisting of three freshman, Mount Saint Vincent is now 8-6 overall after winning only eight games a year ago. With nine regular season games to play before the playoffs even begin, it is now almost a guarantee that the Mount will surpass their 2005-06 win total ... and, they are playing with more and more confidence every time they take the court. 1/18/2007 - In the words of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball Head Coach, Ed Ryder, the Dolphins have arrived. They've come close before, taking Farmingdale State to overtime, battling USMMA-Kings point to the very end, giving Mount Saint Mary a run for their money, and on Tuesday night they were toe-to-toe with a powerhouse Stevens Institute of Technology squad. But in Ryder's own words, until the Mount beat one of the top-four teams in the conference, they have not truly arrived on the Skyline Conference landscape. On Thursday night, Ryder got his wish.
