After the Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead after one inning, the Mount used four runs in the home half of the second to take the lead for good in the opener. The Dolphins scored two runs on an error in the frame and got run scoring singles from Lisa O’Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) and Koerner.
The Dolphins added to their lead with two more runs in their third at-bat, scoring another run on a St. Joseph’s miscue and a sacrifice fly from freshman Katie Shea (Flushing, N.Y.). The Dolphins added a run in the sixth, before the Eagles plated two runs in the home half of the frame to trim the Mount’s lead to 8-4. Gonzalez would get out of the sixth inning jam with two runners in scoring position and then retired the side in order in the seventh to earn the win.
The Dolphins finished game one with 11 hits and took advantage of four St. Joseph’s errors. Koerner went 4-4 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI in the game, while Lisa O’Shea went 2-5 with a pair of RBI. Shea and Gonzalez both scored two runs in the win for the Mount.
In game two runs were harder to come by for the Dolphins. The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning before Koerner blasted a two-run shot to center to move Mount Saint Vincent in front 2-1. St. Joseph’s knotted the game at 2-2 in the home half of the inning on three hits.
The Dolphins scored the deciding run in the fifth when Jillian Troncoso (West Haverstraw, N.Y.) singled home Marni O’Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) to close out the scoring in the game. The Eagles would get a lead off double in the seventh, but Gonzalez retired the next three batters to finish off her second win of the day.
Lisa and Marni O”Shea each had two hits in the second game and a run scored, while Koerner drove in two of the three runs with her long ball.
Gonzalez moved to 5-3 on the season with the two wins on Saturday with a pair of complete games. She worked a total of 14.0 innings walking three overall and fanning six. In game one she allowed four runs, only two earned, on eight hits before allowing just the two runs on 10 hits in game two.
The sweep improves Mount Saint Vincent to 8-8 overall on the season and to 3-7 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Sunday when they take on Mount Saint Mary. First pitch in Newburgh is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
