Throgs Neck, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team dropped a Skyline Conference doubleheader to St. Joseph’s-LI on Saturday afternoon at Maritime. The Golden Eagles won the first game 12-7 and then finished off the sweep with a 10-6 game two victory. The sweep gives Mount Saint Vincent a three game losing streak and drops it to 14-12 overall and to 7-5 in league play.

The Dolphins pounded out 11 hits in the first game, but St. Joseph’s put multiple run innings on the board in three frames and scored single runs in the final three stanzas to earn the win. The Eagles set the tone in the first inning with three runs thanks to a Jon Welsh three-run home run to left field.

Welsh’s long ball was one of three St. Joseph’s would connect on in the opener as Jeff Coyle and Frank DiPresso both went deep in the third to push the visitors in front 6-0. The Eagles would take a 9-1 lead after the top of the sixth with three more runs on four hits.

The Dolphins would put together a late inning attack that saw them score six runs over the final three innings, but the insurance St. Joseph’s added in their final three at-bats proved to be too much. The Dolphins would load the bases with no one out in their final at-bat but would only be able to push across one run on a Mike Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) single with two out.

Five Mount Saint Vincent players finished the opener with two hits with Pope going 2-5 with three RBI. John McManus finished the game 2-2 with three runs scored, while Nick Triolo (Homer, N.Y.) drove in three runs for the Mount.

Welsh went 2-4 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI for St. Joseph’s, while DiPresso went 2-2 with three runs and three driven in. Mike Hernandez also had a strong game with the bat going 3-4 with two runs and a pair of RBI.

Corey Kirsh (East Meadow, N.Y.) took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent after allowing nine earned runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. He fanned three but walked four over the outing. Jason Dierks picked up the win after working an effective 6.2 innings. He allowed two earned runs on five hits for the Eagles.

In game two St. Joseph’s exploded for eight runs in its first two at-bats to blow the game open early. After Ryan Carroll led off the game with a home run to right, St. Joseph’s scored seven times on 10 hits in the second to get all the cushion it would need.

Mount Saint Vincent would inch to within 8-5 after a four run third inning, but could only push one more run across in its final four at-bats. McManus drove in two more runs for the Dolphins in the backend of the set as the Mount again knocked out 11 hits in the contest.

Brendan Russo (Westbury, N.Y.), Mike Ruckdaschel (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, N.J.) all finished the game with two hits and an RBI for the Dolphins. Ruckdaschel also scored a pair of runs in the contest.

Freshman Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent after giving up eight earned runs on 12 hits in 4.0 innings. John Olsen (Seaford, N.Y.) came on to work the final 3.0 innings and allowed a pair of runs on four hits.

The Dolphins will look to snap their three game losing skid with an important league doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Mount Saint Mary. The set in Newburgh is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
