Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team, in action for the first time in over a week due to poor weather and field conditions, was defeated at Division II Mercy on Thursday afternoon by a score of 6-4. Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, N.J.) connected on his second home run of the season and drove in three of the Mount Saint Vincent runs.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the contest on Thursday with a single run in the first and then a pair of tallies in the third. The Mount opened the scoring when Blackford drove in Brendan Russo (Westbury, N.Y.) with a one out single in the opening frame.

Mount Saint Vincent extended its lead in the third inning when Mike Ruckdaschel (East Meadow, N.Y.) led off with a walk and was driven in when Blackford homered to right field. With his two hits on the afternoon Blackford is now batting .392 and has driven in 36 runs.

The Mavericks would cut the Mount lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning on a two run double from Michael Grassano. Mercy would take the lead for good in the fifth with three more runs and would tack on a single insurance run in the sixth. Two of the three runs in the fifth scored on wild pitches with two away in the inning.

Ruckdaschel and Blackford combined for four of the Mount’s six hits in the game with Russo and Fernando Suriel (Yonkers, N.Y.) each collecting one hit each. Freshman Anthony Masullo (Howard Beach, N.Y.) drove in the Mount’s fourth run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Matt Calandrillo (Cold Spring, N.Y.) took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent after working 4.2 innings. He surrendered five earned runs on six hits in the outing. He struck out four Mavericks but walked six as he falls to 3-2 on the season.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 14-10 overall on the season heading into an important conference weekend. The Dolphins will host St. Joseph’s-LI on Saturday before heading to Mount Saint Mary on Sunday afternoon. The home twinbill with the Golden Eagles is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. at Maritime.
