After CCNY jumped out on top with a run in the top of the first inning, the Mount responded with four in the bottom of the third to take a lead they would no relinquish. The Dolphins picked up two hits in the frame with Cuozzo driving in one of the runs with a double, his fifth of the season.
The Mount would add to its lead with six runs in the following inning on four hits and a pair of CCNY errors. Cuozzo drove in his second run in the fourth and Mike Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) forced home a pair of runs with a double in the inning.
After CCNY plated a run in the seventh, the Dolphins closed out the scoring in the bottom half of the inning with four more tallies to secure the win. Mike Ruckdaschel (East Meadow, N.Y.) had the big hit in the inning when he cleared the bases with a double. The two bagger was his fourth of the season and the three RBI give him 24 in 2009.
Mount Saint Vincent had eight different players record at least one hit on Wednesday with three players picking up multiple hit games. Cuozzo led all players with his four hits and also scored a run. Pope finished the afternoon 2-3 with two runs driven in and Anthony Masullo (Howard Beach, N.Y.) went 2-3 with a pair of runs scored. Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, N.J.) also collected a hit and two RBI for the Dolphins in the win.
Batista moved to 2-0 on the season after working 7.0 effective innings. He allowed five hits over the outing and two runs, but only one earned. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine Beavers. Matt Calandrillo (Cold Spring, N.Y.) worked a scoreless eighth for the Mount and John Olsen (Seaford, N.Y.) struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth.
The win is Mount Saint Vincent’ second straight and moves it to 14-9 overall on the season and to 6-3 in home games. After the Easter break the Dolphins will return to action on April 15 when they host Baruch. First pitch with the Bearcats is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Columbia University’s Robertson Field.
