Skills
• Strong inter-personal and communication skills; capable of writing purchase justifications, training users in complex topics, making presentations to an internal audience, and interacting positively with upper management. Independent problem solving; self-direction.
• Ability to identify tasks which require automation and automate them
• Ability to write scripts in some administrative language (Tk, Perl, a shell).
• Comfortable with most aspects of Windows and Linux Administration, Configuration, and security
• Experience maintaining complex TCP/IP networks – Switch and router programming, Firewall and VPN Maintenance, VLANs, DNS, etc.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Administer and Maintain Systems including Email, LDAP, and Blackboad.
• Monitors all ports, switches and servers for network usage and to insure continuous data communications between the backbone of the infrastructure and the users’ machines
• Troubleshoots all network related problems and recommend or perform remedial actions to correct failed services.
• Communicates with ISPs and other vendors about hardware and software purchases, licenses and troubleshooting steps
• Responsible for the security of the network and for backup and restore. Ensure that virus definition files are current and that the engine scans the network appropriately
• Maintains the Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN’s) changing switch configurations appropriately upon equipment moves and additions to the network, maintaining proper access rights.
• Performs minor wiring of connections and works closely with outside vendors on major wiring jobs.
• Responsible for labeling all ports and network equipment and for organizing switch closets to achieve optimum environmental conditions and faster access for troubleshooting. Keeps inventory of all network equipment up to date.
• Coordinates activities with the help desk and other members of the Computer Services Department. Keeps the community informed of planned outages and major projects that affect the network.
• Creates user accounts for network applications and assigns appropriate rights to users
• Responds to user inquiries concerning systems operation and access problems. Diagnoses system hardware, software, and operator problems and helps user by instructing them about proper usage
• Contributes to and maintains documentation of configurations, procedures and disaster recovery.
• Performs all upgrades and updates of the network software and hardware.
• Supervise and train the Junior Network Technician.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related area or equivalent work experience
• 3-5 years network work experience
• Experience with Linux and Windows operating systems and maintenance of complex TCP/IP Networks.
