| Mount Saint Vincent will take part in the WBCA Pink Zone™ on February 21. |
Saturday will mark the first time that Mount Saint Vincent has participated in the event, which raises awareness for breast cancer. In support of the initiative, the Dolphins will don pink shooting shirts prior to the game and on the bench. In addition, the first 200 fans in attendance will receive a Pink Zone T-Shirt.
“I felt it important for our program to get involved if even in a small way,” stated Director of Athletics Steve Macias. “I think it is important that we show our support to the Pink Zone initiative so we can help raise awareness about this deadly disease.”
In order to make a charitable donation to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund™, the department will be raffling off two tickets to a New York Liberty game.
“Even if just a small donation, we want to help the WBCA and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund™ move towards eliminating this disease,” continued Macias.
The Dolphins’ women’s squad will enter Saturday’s game with a 14-9 overall record and a 13-3 mark in Skyline play. Fans are encouragedto wear pink to both games on Saturday. Prior to the Pink Zone game, the Mount Saint Vincent men will tussle with Farmingdale St. at 1:00 p.m.
History: The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone™, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research.
The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund™ was announced on December 3, 2007, during the Jimmy V Classic. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund™, in partnership with The V Foundation for Cancer Research, will raise money in the fight against women's cancers. It was appropriate to announce this Fund during the Jimmy V Classic because of the connection between the late Jim Valvano, former North Carolina State head men's basketball coach, and the late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State head women's basketball coach. The Fund was the first women's initiative that the WBCA has chosen in its 28-year history, and is also the newest women's initiative for The V Foundation.
