Johnson shot 5-11 from the field overall on Wednesday and knocked down four three-pointers to reach the team-high in scoring. He has now scored at least 11 points in the Mount’s last eight contests and is averaging 14.9 points per contest over that stretch. Johnson also grabbed four rebounds and handed out three assists against the Golden Eagles. Over that same eight game stretch Johnson is posting 4.5 boards per night and 3.5 helpers.
Johnson gave the Mount its only lead of the night when he drained a triple 31 seconds into the tilt to put the Dolphins ahead 3-2. From there the Golden Eagles ran off eight straight points to jump out in front 10-3 with 18:24 left in the opening period.
After St. Joseph’s jumped in front by 16, at 24-8, with 15:43 left in the half, Mount Saint Vincent climbed to within six after a Nick DiMaggio (Croton, N.Y.) jumper with 10:56 remaining to cut the deficit to 29-23. St. Joseph’s would respond and take it largest lead of the half with just under a minute left when a pair of J.J. Walsh free-throws moved it to 53-32. A pair of Eric Van Tine (Hawthorne, N.J.) free-throws following a Joe Cooke (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) jumper in the final minute cut the Mount’s disadvantage to 53-36 heading into the intermission.
Walsh scored 21 points in the first half on 7-10 shooting overall and 3-3 shooting from distance, as the Golden Eagles shot 42.9-percent (18-42) from the field in the first period. Chris Jimenez also netted double-figures for the home team, posting 13 points.
The second half proved to be all St. Joseph’s on Wednesday, as it shot an impressive 51.6-percent (16-31) from the floor, including a red-hot 62.5-percent (5-8) from three-point range. The Golden Eagles moved the lead to 25 points early in the second stanza and then a game-high 39 points on a pair of Jimenez free-throws with just over 6:00 left in the contest, before taking the game by the final 33 point verdict.
Walsh finished with a game-high 29 points for St. Joseph’s on 9-13 shooting from the floor and 8-10 from the free-throw line. Jimenez posted 22 points, while David Acree chipped in 15. Walsh finished one rebound shy of a double-double, pulling down a team-high nine, with Acree and Trey Black each handing out four assists.
Cooke and DiMaggio each finished the night with 12 points for the Dolphins and Keiran Halton (Manasquan, N.J.) posted 11 in the loss. DiMaggio and Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished tied for the team lead in rebounds with six.
St. Joseph’s (18-2, 12-1 Skyline) finished with a 57-39 edge on the glass on Wednesday night and turned 15 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers into 26 points. The Golden Eagles’ bench also outscored their opponents 30-21.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 11-8 overall on the season and to 9-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will stay on the road for their next contest when they travel to Polytechnic on February 7. The game features head coaches who are brothers in Brian and Dan Nigro. Tip-off with the Blue Jays is set for 3:00 p.m.
