After the Dolphins took a brief one point lead early in the contest, the Blue Knights used a three from Catie Biordi to go ahead for good with 16:30 left in the first half. Mount Saint Mary would extend the lead to nine points with 11:43 left in the period, before the Dolphins used a 6-1 run to cut their deficit to just four points with 8:45 to play in the first.
The Blue Knight would fend off the run by the Dolphins and extend their lead to double-figures at 24-13 on a Chrissy Zrowka fast break bucket. They would extend the lead to 19 points late in the half on a Zrowka triple, before taking a 36-20 advantage into halftime.
Mount Saint Mary shot an even 50-percent (14-28) from the floor in the first half, including a red hot 62.5-percent (5-8) from long range. The Dolphins struggled shooting the ball in the first, going just 6-29 (20.7-percent) from the floor. Zrowka led all scorers before halftime with 10 points.
After falling behind by 20 early in the second half, Mount Saint Vincent put together a 17-4 run to get within seven points with 14:24 left in regulation. The spurt was keyed by a pair of three pointers from Mocanu and one from Kerry O’Connor (Bethpage, N.Y.).
That seven point margin would be as close as the Dolphins would get the remainder of the contest, with the Blue Knights answering the run with an 11-2 spurt of their own to pull in front 55-39 with 10:26 left in the contest. The Mount Saint Mary lead would balloon to 19 points on an Amanda Horvers triple, before taking the contest by the final 15 point margin.
Mount Saint Vincent shot 30.9-percent (17-55) from the floor, which marks the second lowest shooting percentage of the season. Seven of its 17 field goals came from long range and the Dolphins shot just 60.9-percent (14-23) from the free-throw line. Mount Saint Mary finished 46.2-percent (24-52) from the field and 42.1-percent (8-19) from long range.
Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) finished with a game-high 12 rebounds on Saturday and also handed out four assists. Lauren Percodani (Staten Island, N.Y.) chipped in with nine points and a pair of helpers, while Ashley Ruiz (Carmel, N.Y.) came in off the bench and posted six points and four boards.
The Blue Knights (14-4, 11-0 Skyline) had five players score in double-figures on the afternoon, with Biordi and Zrowka each netting 14 points. Meredith Paggi finished with 13 points and three assists, while Shannon Sangster and Horvers each posted 12 points. The win marks the tenth straight for Mount Saint Mary.
The loss snaps a three game winning streak for the Dolphins and drops them to 10-9 overall on the season and to 9-3 in the Skyline Conference. The Mount will be back in action again on February 4 when it travels to St. Joseph’s-LI. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
