Men’s Volleyball Opens Season Tonight At Polytechnic
Dolphins open 2009 with Skyline match

Riverdale, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men’s Volleyball team will open its 2009 schedule on Wednesday night with a road Skyline Conference match at Polytechnic. The Dolphins open the season with three of their first four matches on the road, with the lone home match coming Thursday night against Hunter.

The Dolphins are coming off a 2008 campaign that saw them go 13-15 overall, 4-6 in the Northeast Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) and 6-2 mark in the Skyline Conference. The Dolphins advanced to the championship match of the inaugural Skyline Championships last season, before being downed by host Bard 3-0.

Mount Saint Vincent returns three of its top four leaders in kills last season in David Guerrero (East Meadow, NY), John Furka (Massapequa, NY) and T.J. Pufahl (Bethpage, NY). Guerrero, who was named NEVCA Metro Division Rookie of the Year in 2008, led the team in kills with 341 and kills per game at 3.92. Guerrero was also the team leader in service aces last season, recording 53 and finished second on the squad in digs with 170.

Furka comes into his sophomore season after leading the team in attack percentage as a freshman with a .305 mark. He also finished second on the team in kills with 191 and in kills per game with 2.03. Furka paced the team in blocks with 79 and also recorded 25 service aces on the season.

Pufahl enters his senior season with 622 career kills after posting 172 a season ago. Pufahl had a solid all-around season as a junior in 2008, which saw him post 27 aces, 60 digs and 40 total blocks.

Also returning in 2009 for the Dolphins will be setters Chris Dotoratos (Bronx, NY) and Michael Quinn (Wantagh, NY). In 27 matches last season, Dotoratos led the team in assists with 516, which was good for just under six helpers per game. He also posted 27 service aces, 136 defensive digs and 30 total blocks. As a freshman, Quinn posted 497 assists to go along with 25 service aces. He also contributed 106 digs on the season and 28 total blocks.

Following the match tonight at Polytechnic, the Dolphins will host Hunter on Thursday in a non-league match at Hayes Gymnasium. Both tonight’s and tomorrow’s matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
