| Junior Eric Lastres netted a career-high 20 points on Saturday. |
Mount Saint Vincent held a 67-59 lead at halftime after shooting 59-percent from the field and 50-percent from three point range. Polytechnic also shot the ball effectively in the first half, finishing the half 17-36 from the floor, including 7-12 from three point land. Arjun Ohri led all scorers in the half with 24 points.
The Dolphins led by as many as 16 in the first half on a three-pointer from DiMaggio with just under 10 minutes left in the period. The Blue Jays cut into the Mount lead and closed to within eight points on a pair of Robert Williams’ free-throws with 29 seconds left in the frame.
Polytechnic (0-13, 0-6 Skyline) used a three from Thomas DeMarco early in the second half to cut its deficit to five points. Mount Saint Vincent would answer with a quick 9-0 run and then would methodically increase its lead to a game-high 24 points on a lay-up from Joe Cooke (Mount Vernon, NY) with 5:35 left in the contest.
The 129 points are a season-high and is just eight points shy of the program’s all-time single game output of 137 in the 1989-90 season. It is the fifth time the Dolphins have shot at least 50-percent from the floor this season. On Saturday, Mount Saint Vincent finished 50.6-percent from the field (43-85) overall and 85-percent (34-40) from the free-throw line.
Four Mount Saint Vincent players either set or matched career-highs in points in the contest. Matias Roibal (Boonton, NJ) matched his career mark with 10 points in the game and he also finished with five rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Eric Lastres (Bayside, NY) finished with a career-high 20 points to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshmen Keiran Halton (Manasquan, NJ) and Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, NY) also had career days, scoring 17 and 12 points respectively.
Dino Johnson (Amsterdam, NJ) also finished in double-figures on the day, netting 16 points and adding a team-high five assists. Lastres and DiMaggio also chipped in with four helpers a piece in the winning effort.
Polytechnic put five players in double-figures in the contest, led by Ohri’s 41 points on 14-26 shooting. He finished 6-12 from long range on the afternoon and went a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line for the Blue Jays. Anthony Mottola finished the tilt with a double-double, posting 19 points and grabbing 11 boards.
The win pushes Mount Saint Vincent’s overall record to 7-5 and its Skyline Conference mark to 5-1. The Dolphins won just six league games all of last season. Up next from the Mount is a trip to Purchase on January 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
