Dolphins Ground Blue Jays For Second Straight Win
Mocanu leads way with 22 points

RIVERDALE, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Basketball team picked up its second straight Skyline Conference victory on Saturday afternoon with a 78-50 triumph over Polytechnic. Freshman Jen Mocanu (Middletown, NJ) led the Mount Saint Vincent charge with 22 points to go along with nine rebounds.

The Dolphins got off to a slow start on Saturday, falling behind by as many as eight points in the first six minutes of the contest. After falling behind 11-3 with 14:08 left in the half Mocanu hit back-to-back threes and Kerry O’Connor (Bethpage, NY) added a third triple to push the Mount in front 12-11 with 12:43 left in the half.

After the Blue Jays edged in front 14-12, the Dolphins went on a 12-3 run to open a seven point lead with just over seven minutes left. Mount Saint Vincent pushed its lead to double-figures with 3:38 left in the period and took its largest lead of the frame at 39-23 on another three-pointer from Mocanu with 1:23 left before the intermission.

The Dolphins’ first four field goals of the game came from behind the three point arc and they went 8-14 from long range in the half. All four of Mocanu’s field goals in the opening half were three-pointers as she finished the frame with 14 points.

Mount Saint Vincent outscored Polytechnic 39-24 in the second half as nine players found the scoring column in the period. Mocanu closed out a strong game by going 4-8 from the floor in the half, while Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY) and O’Connor each canned a pair of threes for the Mount.

Saturday marked the second straight time that Mount Saint Vincent held its opponent to under 30-percent shooting from the field. After holding Sage to a season low 26-percent from the field on Tuesday, the Dolphins held Polytechnic to 29.1-percent (16-55) from the floor on Saturday afternoon.

Mocanu led the team in both scoring and rebounding on the afternoon to go along with four assists, a block and a steal. Koerner finished the contest with 11 points and three assists. Lauren Percodani (Staten Island, NY) posted a strong all-around game with 10 points, four rebounds, three steals and a game-high nine assists.

The Mount shot an even 40-percent from the floor overall in the game, including a 48.1-percent clip from long range. The Dolphins out rebounded the Blue Jays 52-38, including a 22-14 edge on the offensive glass. The defense also forced 18 turnovers and turned those into 21 points.

Polytechnic (3-6, 2-3 Skyline) was led by Margaux Pickell with 17 points and eight rebounds and Megan Bosi who made a pair of threes on her way to 10 points.

After a four game losing streak the Dolphins have now won two straight to improve to 6-7 overall and to 5-1 in Skyline Conference play. Up next for the Mount will be a road date at Purchase on January 14. Tip-off with the Panthers is set for 6:00 p.m.
