All students are required to take two semesters, or 6 credits, of a modern language other than English at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. These credits must be in the same language.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures strongly recommends that all students fulfill their core modern language requirement during their Freshman year.

1.   Entering students who continue language study begun elsewhere are placed in an appropriate language course on the basis of their academic record (GPA, SAT, AP, IB, rank, grades), number of years of language study and intended major.

2.   Advanced Placement Exam. Students who have taken the AP Exam are not exempt from the 6-credit core modern language requirement. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures recognizes AP language and literature scores of 3, 4 and 5 and accepts them for elective credit. An AP language score of 3, 4 or 5 will result in 3 elective credits; an AP literature score of 3, 4 or 5 will also result in 3 elective credits. The maximum number of accepted elective credits for combined AP exams is therefore 6 credits. If a student declares a language Major or a Minor, these elective credits may be applied to the Major or Minor program as MLL language credits.

3.   International Baccalaureate Exam.  Students who have taken the IB Exam in a modern language are not exempt from the 6-credit core modern language requirement. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures recognizes IB scores of 4, 5 and 6.  Based on the exam score and an interview with the Department Chairperson, a student may receive up to 6 elective credits. If a student declares a language Major or a Minor, these electives credits may be applied to the Major or Minor program as MLL language credits.

4.   College-Level Courses. Students who have taken college-level courses in high school are not exempt from the 6-credit core modern language requirement. High school college-level transfer credits are accepted as elective credits. If a student declares a language Major or a Minor, these elective credits may be applied to the Major or Minor program as MLL language credits, provided that they are based on the grade of “C” or above.  Placement will be determined based on the student’s transcript.

5.  TOEFL Exam. International students who have presented TOEFL scores for admission are usually excused from the modern language requirement, but must take additional courses (6 credits) in English. They must first consult the Department Chairperson for approval.

6.  The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures does not recognize the CLEP exam.
