Mocanu knocked down six of the 10 shots she took from the field overall and was 2-3 from behind the arc. She also grabbed three rebounds and swiped four steals. Mocanu also went 3-6 from the free-throw line.
The lead changed hands five times in the first half on Tuesday with Mount Saint Vincent taking the lead for good at 31-28 with 3:27 left in the half on a three-pointer from Mocanu. The Dolphins ran out to an eight point advantage at halftime when Joelle Denotaris (Verona, NJ) knocked down a pair of free throws with six seconds left before the intermission.
The Dolphins scored the first seven points of the second half to push its lead to 13 with 16:58 left in the contest and to a game-high 20 on a three from Lauren Percodani (Staten Island, NY) with 10:55 remaining in regulation.
Mount Saint Vincent shot 42.4-percent from the floor in the contest and went 9-23 from behind the three point arc. The Dolphins struggled from the free-throw line however, finishing just 21-34. The Dolphins’ defense held St. Joseph’s to 38-percent shooting and forced 28 turnovers.
Joining Mocanu in double-figures on the night were Korissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY) with 16 points on 5-8 shooting from the floor and Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, NY) who finished with 10 points. Three Dolphins finished with five rebounds on the night, with Heesemann, Brittany Griffin (Suffern, NY) and Beck Delude (South Portland, ME) all finishing tied for the team lead.
Percodani posted a game-high six assists against just one turnover for the Mount and also chipped in with eight points and four steals. Ashley Ruiz (Carmel, NY) came off the bench to finish with seven points, four rebounds and three assists in the winning effort.
St. Joseph’s (0-8, 0-3 Skyline) had four players finish in double-figures and was led by Carissa Pirotta’s 15 points. Trish McMahon finished with 13 points and four rebounds, while Bridgett Lovett and Dana Carney each posted 11 points for the visiting Golden Eagles.
The win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 4-3 overall on the season and to 3-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will step outside the league for its next four contests starting with a December 16 game against Montclair State. Tip-Off for the rematch of last season’s ECAC Metro Division Tournament First Round game is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Hayes Gymnasium.
