DiMaggio shot 9-23 from the floor on the night and knocked down a career-high seven three-pointers. He rounded out a solid effort with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the tilt. Joe Cooke (Mount Vernon, NY) posted 21 points and has scored at least 20 points in the last six contests.
The Mount jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the contest keyed by two Cooke jumpers sandwiched around DiMaggio’s first three pointer of the evening. The Golden Eagles responded with the next seven points to tie the score, before the Dolphins stormed back out to a six point lead at 25-19 on a three-pointer from Eric Lastres (Bayside, NY) with 9:48 left in the half.
The Golden Eagles again put together a run and retook the lead for good with 6:31 left in the opening period. St. Joseph’s ran out to an 11 point lead with 4:03 left before halftime on a free-throw from Trey Black. But in a back and forth contest, the Dolphins used a three from DiMaggio to cut the deficit to one with just under a minute left. Chris Jimenez closed the half with a jump shot to give the visitors a 43-40 edge at the intermission.
Mount Saint Vincent would not be able to claw any closer than four points in the second half. The Golden Eagles stretched the lead to a game-high 15 points at 86-71 on a lay-up from Mike Crisci with 4:21 left in regulation. The Dolphins had one last run in them to cut the lead to nine points on a Lastres lay-up with 2:30 left, but St. Joseph’s knocked in five of its seven free-throws down the stretch to earn the final 13 point advantage.
The Golden Eagles (7-0, 3-0 Skyline) held a 59-45 advantage on the glass Tuesday, including a 22-13 edge on the offensive glass. The rebounding advantage led to a 40-18 edge in points in the paint and St. Joseph’s outscored the Mount 30-11 in second chance opportunities.
Mount Saint Vincent shot 36.8-percent from the floor on the night and 45.8-percent from behind the arc. The visitors shot 41.2-percent from the floor and were led by David Acree who finished with 26 points on 10-25 shooting and 6-11 shooting from long range. J.J. Walsh posted 24 points to go along with a game-high 16 rebounds. Chris Niblock also had a strong outing with 16 points and 15 boards.
Lastres finished with 11 points for the Dolphins to go along with eight rebounds, while Matias Roibal (Boonton, NJ) finished with a team-high nine boards.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent back to .500 overall at 4-4 and to 2-1 in the Skyline Conference. The Dolphins will be back in action again on December 17 at Yeshiva. Tip-Off with the Maccabees is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
