Department of Sociology
Mount Saint Vincent is a small college with an intimate community, in America's largest city. The sociology faculty recognize the opportunity this provides for flexible education and training of individual students. Our faculty/student ratio is small and our faculty attentive, so that we can tailor our educational programs to specific needs of individual students. Students are grounded in the substance of the discipline, yet encouraged to develop expertise according to their own interests and needs.

Sociology is the scientific study of human social structures and behavior. It provides a rich foundation of practical and theoretical knowledge directly concerned with all dimensions of social life...from the intimacy of family relations to the angry mob...from crime to religion...from the experience of social diversity to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and more.....

The knowledge and skills acquired by sociology majors are central to understanding the most critical questions in our society today, as well as the most critical needs in the labor market. Sociology graduates will have developed an  understanding of human behavior, cultural influences, organizational aspects of life, and work that is very applicable to the demands of different careers.

The Department of Sociology offers a diverse program that establishes a strong foundation for an informed understanding of the nature of social life and social change. Students majoring in sociology select one of several areas of concentration that include criminology and justice, social work, education, and general sociology. Additionally, students are encouraged to participate in internships that provide "real life" experience in the many  fields that are related to the study of sociology.

In the Sociology Department at Mount Saint Vincent, our success is dependent on the success of our students.
