Gormley, who also coaches the women’s lacrosse team at the Mount, inherits a team that went 7-11 a year ago and missed the Skyline Conference Tournament by one point, finishing with a 3-6 record in league play. The Dolphins posted a four game winning streak last season and six of their seven wins came via shutout.
Although the Mount lost its leading scorer, Cynthia Osorio, to graduation, the team returns three of its top six scorers and has six returnees in all. Jessica McBain (Troy, NY) posted 13 points as a junior in 2007 on five goals and three assists and is the top returning scorer on the team. Fellow senior Jen Lupero (Mamaroneck, NY) posted 10 points a year ago on four goals and two helpers, while junior Kelly Curran (Wharton, NJ) posted seven points on a pair of goals and three assists.
One of the major losses for the Dolphins will be in net. Gone from last season’s squad is Alexis Alessi who was a mainstay in goal for four years at the Mount. Alessi recorded all seven wins for the Mount in 2007, making 170 saves and posting a .817 save percentage. Looking to fill the void left by Alessi will be a pair of freshman.
Of the 17 games on the 2008 schedule, the Dolphins will play 11 home contests including Saturday night’s tilt. After the opener with the Griffins, the Mount will play road games at Division II St. Thomas Aquinas and Yeshiva. Following the Skyline opener with the Maccabess, Mount Saint Vincent will play five of the next seven games at home. The only road games in that stretch will be played at the William Smith Heron Cup in Geneva, NY.
Kick-off for Saturday night’s game has been pushed back to 7:30 p.m. at Tibbetts. The Dolphins will be back in action again at home on Wednesday, September 10 against St. Elizabeth.
