Mount Saint Vincent’s Michael Pope Named Skyline Conference Baseball Rookie Of The Year

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – College of Mount Saint Vincent freshman Michael Pope (Massapequa, NY) has been named the Skyline Conference Baseball Rookie of the Year it was announced on Monday afternoon. Three other Dolphins received all-league recognition, as Tanner and Zach Munroe (Milford, CT) were named All-Skyline Conference First Team and Pope and Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, NJ) were named Second Team All-Skyline Conference.

Through Sunday, Pope stands third on the team among regulars with a .368 batting average. He has appeared in 28 games in his rookie season and made 26 starts. Pope has ripped 10 doubles in 2008, including four in a game on April 30 against Polytechnic. He has crossed with 30 runs and driven in 16 as a freshman. Pope has nine multi-hit games so far this season, including three hits in a game on four occasions. Pope has also been a standout with the glove in 2008 as he has posted a .986 fielding percentage in 213 chances.

The Munroe brothers have been a force at the plate all season for the Dolphins. Tanner has posted a .407 batting average thus far and has played in 34 games, making 32 starts. He is 48-118 on the season with 13 doubles and a pair of home runs. Tanner stands third on the team in runs scored with 32 and is tied for the team lead in runs batted in with 36. He has 15 multi-hit games in 2008 and 10 multi-RBI games, including driving in five runs on April 26 against Mount Saint Mary in game two of a doubleheader.

Zach Munroe has also had an impressive year for the Mount in 2008. He holds a batting average of .355 and leads the team in runs scored with 38. Zach is tied with Tanner for the team lead in both doubles with 13 and RBI with 36. Zach has also connected on a pair of home runs which is tied for second on the team with Tanner. Zach has 10 multi-hit games on the year and has driven in at least two runs in a game on nine occasions. He leads the team with 17 two out RBI. Zach has also been an important contributor to the Dolphins on the mound. He is 2-0 on the season with a 2.77 earned run average. In his last outing he picked up the win after firing 7.0 shutout innings in a 10-0 win over St. Joseph’s (LI) to keep Mount Saint Vincent alive in the Skyline Conference Tournament.

Blackford has also been a big part of the Mount’s success in 2008 both with the bat and on the mound. Blackford is hitting .383 on the season and is third on the team with 26 RBI. He has recorded seven doubles, a triple and a home run this season and has also scored 33 runs for the Dolphins. Blackford has not committed an error in 2008 in over 60 chances between left field and the mound. Aside from hitting in the middle of the Mount Saint Vincent lineup, Blackford doubles as the team’s closer. He has recorded five saves and a 2.00 ERA this season. He latest save came on Saturday in a 14-12 win over Mount Saint Mary in the Skyline Conference Tournament.

The Dolphins are in the midst of the most successful season in program history. Mount Saint Vincent advanced to the championship round of the Skyline Conference Tournament where it was downed by Farmingdale State after forcing the play back game. At 23-15, the Dolphins will await word on an ECAC Metro Division Tournament bid. If invited to the tournament, the Mount will play again on Wednesday at a place and time to be determined.
