Director of Campus Safety and Security
We seek a talented professional to assume responsibility for the effective and sensitive administration of security, safety education, accident prevention, fire safety and parking enforcement programs.
He/She will appreciate and maintain the delicate balance between campus safety and campus freedom that must be struck in an educational environment.
The Director serves as a full-time administrator within the Division of Business, reporting directly to the Vice President for Business. The Director maintains an especially strong liaison relationship to Student Affairs.
Qualifications Successful candidates will have:
• earned a baccalaureate degree in an appropriate field of study.
• at least five years of progressively responsible experience in campus safety
• familiarity with relevant federal laws (Jeanne Clery Act) and New York State laws (Suzanne Lyall Campus Safety Act), and New York City Fire Safety and Emergency Response protocols as well as current campus security trends and best practices;
• proficiency in database management, Microsoft Office, and familiarity with various security systems.
• No more than a 15 minute commute to campus.
• excellent oral and written communications skills.
Duties
General
• Establish program goals and work objectives
consistent with college policy, relevant city, state and
federal law, and national-best practices in campus
safety.
• Establish and maintain close working relationship with students, Sisters of Charity, guests and employees, with particular cooperation expected with the offices and staffs of Residence life, Athletics, Student Activities, Sisters of Charity, Campus Events, and Facilities
• Maintain and institute emergency operating procedures.
• Develop a comprehensive parking program
• Prepare and administer the department budget.
• Maintain adequate records (security reports, accident and safety problems, traffic ticket billings, key issuance records and vehicle registrations), and assure confidentiality when necessary
• Maintain necessary equipment required to accomplish the mission of the department.
• Remain at or report to the College in the
event of an emergency to assure safe and uninterrupted
operations
• The Director is required to be on-call and
respond to serious emergency incidents on campus
Personnel
• Recruit, select and supervise staff of eighteen (18) full-time security personnel as well as student security aides.
• Maintain a staff work schedule for a continuous 24-hour, 7-day weekly operation.
• Develop adequate and relevant state-mandated and in-service training programs for security personnel that support policy enforcement, fire safety, and accident prevention in the college environment.
• Develop and conduct formal and informal personnel evaluations in accord with standard College procedures to ensure adherence to the highest standards of integrity and professional conduct.
Enforcement and Prevention
• Act as a liaison with local, state and
federal law enforcement agencies.
• Conduct educational programs for students and staff in the interest of crime, accident and fire prevention.
• Direct a continuous patrol of College property to prevent crime and to protect life and property, enforce appropriate college regulations, and render service to the public.
• Establish an effective parking control program.
• Conduct follow-up investigations of incidents and recommend corrective action.
Life Safety
• Maintain and update the security and emergency procedures manuals and other policies and operating statements.
• Develop procedures that supplement and
support the approved emergency response procedures.
• Review, investigate, and analyze reported
violations of safety laws and regulations and recommend
corrective action for deficiencies.
• Plan, develop, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, and programs related to safety practices applicable to employees, students, and visitors.
