After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning in game one, the Dolphins wasted little time getting themselves on the board. The first seven batters to come to the plate crossed with a run to push the Mount ahead 7-1 after the opening frame.
Polytechnic would score three runs in the top half of the second inning to cut into the Mount Saint Vincent lead, but three runs would be as close as the Fighting Blue Jays would get the rest of the contest.
Mount Saint Vincent used a run in the fourth, seven more in the sixth and five in the eighth to get to the 20 run mark for the second time this season.
Six Mount Saint Vincent players finished the opener with at least two hits, with Canzano and Mauzy each collecting four. The top two hitters in the lineup in game one combined to go 8-12 with six runs scored and five RBI. The duo each scored three runs, with Canzano driving in three for the Dolphins.
Josh Cuozzo (Westbury, NY) went 2-2 with three runs scored and a game-high five RBI. Tanner Munroe (Milford, CT), Dave Dempsey (Brewster, NY) and Brendan Russo (Westbury, NY) all collected a pair of hits in the winning effort.
Ryan Strub (Bohemia, NY) picked up his career-best third win of the season, as he moved to 3-0 on the year. He worked 7.2 innings and allowed six runs, with only five being earned. He did not walk a batter in the outing and he fanned eight Blue Jays on his way to the win.
In the second game, the Mount jumped on top with a pair of runs in its first at-bat. Canzano and Vinny Todino (Eastchester, NY) each crossed for the Dolphins in the opening frame.
Mount Saint Vincent would hold the lead until the fourth when Polytechnic’s Jon Paul Anatra connected on a three-run home run to push the Blue Jays out front by a score of 4-2. Mount Saint Vincent would answer with a run in the home half of the fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a 6-4 advantage into the final inning.
Polytechnic put up four runs in the seventh to get away with the split and snap Mount Saint Vincent’s seven game winning streak. The first five Blue Jays of the inning reached base and the first four scored. The Dolphins got a lead-off double from Tanner Munroe in the seventh but could not get anything across.
Mike Trainor (Patterson, NY) pitched 6.0 strong innings for the Mount. He allowed just four earned runs on seven hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out six for the Dolphins on the day. Scott Taylor (Jersey City, NY) took the loss in relief and fell to 1-2 on the year.
The split moves Mount Saint Vincent to 13-12 overall on the season and to 7-5 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back on the diamond again on Saturday when they host Stevens. First pitch at SUNY Purchase is set for Noon.
