Women’s Lacrosse Edged By Scranton In Home Opener
Martin records sixth hat-trick, nets four goals

Kelly Martin led the Mount with four goals against Scranton.
YONKERS, NY – In its home opener, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse team dropped a 16-10 decision to the University of Scranton (4-3) on Saturday evening. Kelly Martin (Stony Point, NY) continued her strong play for the Dolphins, scoring four goals. Chanel Comis (Durham, NC) and Lauren Perla (Holbrook, NY) each added two goals apiece.

Mount Saint Vincent again opened the game strong, scoring the first three goals of the contest. Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD), Martin and Comis all tallied inside the first eight minutes of the game. After a Scranton goal from Madelyn Sminkey, Martin scored her second of the game to give the Dolphins a 4-1 lead at the 20:51 mark of the opening half.

From that point, Scranton reeled off five straight goals before Martin tallied again with 12:27 left in the half. Scranton closed the half with two goals to take an 8-5 lead into the break.

The Dolphins opened the second half with two quick goals from Perla to close the gap to 8-7 with just under 22:00 left in the contest. Scranton was again up the task, as it answered with six straight goals to open 14-7 lead with 14:49 left in regulation time. Mount Saint Vincent would run off three goals to close to within four, but the Royals added two insurance goals to secure the victory.

Martin recorded her sixth hat-trick of the season with her four goal output in the game, while Jessie Mitchell (Suffern, NY) recorded a three point night with a goal and a pair of assists.

Cynthia Osorio (Oceanside, NY) played a strong defensive game for the Dolphins, as she caused two turnovers and picked up five groundballs. Mitchell collected three groundballs and won a team-high four draw controls in the game, while Megan Fleri (Islip, NY) and Erin Woerner (Kings Park, NY) each recorded two draw controls.

Scranton was led by four goals from Kristen Marquino and Sminkey, while Marquino also added a pair of assists for a six point night.

Jackie Horn (Setauket, NY) made the start in goal for the Dolphins and recorded 15 saves and picked up four groundballs. Cassie Murphy made seven saves for the Royals, including four in the second half.

Overall in the game, Scranton held the advantage in shots 42-25, groundballs 36-19 and draw controls 17-11. Turnovers in the game were 27-14 against Mount Saint Vincent and the Dolphins went 11-20 in clear attempts.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 1-5 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to action on Monday, March 31 against Western Connecticut. The game is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers.
