The Dolphins had just the one base runner in the opener, as they struggled to solve St. Joseph’s starter Jennifer Martinez. Martinez was dominate for the Golden Eagles as she fanned 18 and allowed just the one hit. Martinez struck out the first nine batters and struck out the side in four of the seven innings.
Martinez and Elyse Quirk hit home runs for St. Joseph’s for all in the insurance it would need.
In game two, Tirado connected on a triple in the first inning and ripped a single up the middle in the third for the Dolphins only two hits of the contest. Dana McGuire (Setauket, NY) scored the Mount’s only run of the afternoon in the fifth inning after reaching on an error to open the frame. She was pushed home after a misplayed fly ball with two outs.
Martinez was again strong as she fanned 13 in five innings to move her record to 7-1 on the season. She allowed just the two hits and the one unearned run.
Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, IN) threw both games for the Mount and fell to 4-6 overall on the season. In the opening game, Gonzalez went the distance and allowed seven runs on nine hits. She struck out two in the loss and did not walk a batter.
The sweep drops the Mount’s record to 5-7 overall on the season and to 0-2 in the Skyline Conference. The Dolphins will be back in action again tomorrow at Farmingdale State. The Skyline doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
