MADISON, NJ – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse team opened the 2008 season with a tight 10-7 loss at Drew on Sunday night. The Dolphins had five different players record goals, led by Kelly Martin’s (Stony Point, NY) hat trick. Martin also recorded an assist to give her a four point game.

The Dolphins held a 6-4 lead at the half after they scored the first four goals of the contest. Martin opened the scoring with her first of the season at the 6:50 mark and that was followed by a Chanel Comis (Durham, NC) tally. Jessie Mitchell (Suffern, NY) followed that with her first career marker at the 12:17 mark, before Martin notched her second of the evening to give the Dolphins a 4-0 lead halfway through the opening period.

Drew’s Morgan Kenney got Drew on the board with 18:34 left in the first half on her first of the season and the Rangers would close the half scoring four of the final six goals to cut the Mount lead to just two at the break.

The Rangers opened the second half strong as they scored the first four goals out of halftime to take an 8-6 lead. Erin Woerner (Kings Park, NY) would tally with just under ten minutes left to play in the contest to bring the Mount within a goal, but Drew would answer with two late markers to earn the eventual 10-7 win.

All three of Martin’s goals came in the first half, as the Dolphins were held to just a single goal in the second period. Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD) also scored for the Mount.

Drew was led by three players with at least a pair of goals, with Statcie Brown finding the back of the cage three times. Lindsey Perno and Kenney each scored twice for the Rangers.

Overall in the game, Drew held the advantage in shots 22-16 and in groundballs 20-14. Turnovers in the contest were 14-12 against the Rangers.

Jackie Horn (Setauket, NY) got the nod in goal for the Dolphins and made five saves, while Drew used a pair of keepers who combined to stop six Mount Saint Vincent shots.

The loss drops the Dolphins to 0-1 on the season. They will be back in action this weekend when they take on Stevens and Elmira on the road. Saturday’s game at Stevens is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., while Sunday’s tilt at Elmira is set for 2:00 p.m.
