Men’s Basketball edged on the road at Mount Saint Mary
Three Dolphins score in double-figures

NEWBURGH, NY – The Men’s Basketball team at Mount Saint Vincent dropped an 80-73 decision at Mount Saint Mary on Saturday afternoon. Three Dolphins scored in double-figures on the day, led by Joe Cooke’s (Mount Vernon, NY/Fordham Prep) 16 points. Senior captain Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond’s) also had a strong afternoon, scoring 14 points for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins jumped out to a quick seven point lead, at 16-9, just under six minutes into the contest. Mount Saint Vincent would match that lead, going ahead 20-13, on a lay-up from Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) with 12:57 left in the first half.

Mount Saint Mary would knot the score at 24-24 on a lay-up from Matt Cunningham with 4:40 left in the frame. The Dolphins, though, would not relinquish the lead as they finished the half on a 9-6 run to take a 33-30 into halftime.

The Dolphins shot .455 from the floor in the first 20:00, but were 0-5 from three-point land. Garlan posted a team-high eight points in the half on 4-5 shooting from the field. Garlan also led the squad with six rebounds, while freshman Kyle Byrons (Goshen, NY/Burke Catholic) finished the frame with five boards.

The Mount Saint Vincent defense held Mount Saint Mary to just .333 shooting the first and the Dolphins held a 25-16 edge in rebounding at the half, leading to a 22-12 advantage in points in the paint.

Mount Saint Mary knocked down six three-pointers in the second half as it outscored Mount Saint Vincent 50-40 in the final frame.

The Blue Knights would take their first lead of the afternoon with 12:41 left on a three-pointer from Dave Canazon. The Dolphins would retake the lead with 10:52 left when Dino Johnson (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) knocked down the Mount’s only three-pointer of the game to push them ahead 53-51.

Following Johnson’s three, the score would be tied on five occasions with the last coming at 63-63 with 6:01 left in regulation. The Dolphins would take the lead by four following that capped by a Charlton lay-up to push the Dolphins ahead 67-63.

The Blue Knights would respond with a lay-up from Tim Morris with 4:40 left and then a three-pointer from Alex Kuchar to put the Knights ahead 68-67 with 4:15 remaining in the tilt. Mount Saint Mary would score 12 of the final 18 points of the game to take the final seven point advantage.

For the game, the Dolphins shot .477 from the floor, but were just 1-9 from three-point land. Mount Saint Vincent held a 46-32 edge in rebounding and held a 44-30 advantage in points in the paint.

Joining Cooke and Charlton in double-figures on the day was Byrons, who finished with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Garlan finished the contest with eight boards and Charlton chipped in with seven, while Patrick Panetta (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) led the team with four assists.

Kuchar led four Mount Saint Mary players in double-figures with 23 points and knocked down four of the team’s eight three-pointers in the game.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 8-13 overall and to 5-9 in league play. Mount Saint Vincent will be back in action on Thursday, February 14 against St. Joseph’s (LI) at 6:00 p.m. Prior to the contest, the two seniors on this year’s squad will be honored as part of senior night.
