After Maritime tied the scored at 2-2 just over three minutes into the contest, the Privateers would not relinquish the lead the remainder of the half. The Privateers biggest lead of the half, 16 points at 30-14, with 3:31 left in the half came after a jumper from Giovanni Hurley. A Kenny Widgeon (Plainfield, NJ/The Hotchkiss School) lay-up closed the deficit to 12 points with 33 seconds remaining, but Rahshawn Pringle buried a jumper for Maritime with four second left in the frame to give the Privateers a 35-21 advantage at halftime.
Charlton led all scorers in the half with eight points and he added four rebounds for the Mount. Widgeon added six points in the first 20:00 to go along with three rebounds. Overall the Dolphins shot just .276 (8-29) from the floor and only .167 (1-6) from three-point range.
The second half opened with a quick 11-5 spurt by the Privateers and gave them what looked to be a commanding 20 point advantage with 15:29 left in the contest. Following a lay-up from Hurley to push the lead to 20, the Mount responded with a 17-0 run to cut the deficit to 46-43 with just over nine minutes left in regulation.
After Maritime’s Michael Stolberg nailed a jumper to push the Privateer lead back to five, Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) buried a jumper and Dino Johnson (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) canned a three to tie the score at 48-48 with 8:11 to play.
The Dolphins would take their first lead since 2-0 with 7:32 left on a free-throw from Johnson. Following a Hurley free-throw to tie the score for the second time in the game the teams traded baskets and with 6:27 remaining in the tilt the score was tied at 51-51.
The Privateers then used a quick 8-1 run to open a seven
point lead, at 59-52, with just under four minutes left.
Following back-to-back lay-ups from Garlan, the Dolphins
were within one point with 1:34 remaining. Maritime would
open a three-point lead, at 66-63, on a free-throw from
Hurley before the Mount closed to a point again with 38
ticks left on a pair from the charity stripe from
Garlan.
That would be as close as the Dolphins would get, as
Jamal Webb converted two foul shots with four seconds
left to send Maritime to the win and the season sweep
over the Dolphins.
Joe Cooke (Mount Vernon, NY/Fordham Prep) led the Mount in scoring with 16 points and knocked down three triples in the game. Garlan also posted double-figures with 14 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor and a perfect 4-4 mark from the free-throw line.
Overall, the Mount shot .343 from the field and .294 from long range. The Dolphins held a 46-33 edge in rebounding, including a 24-10 advantage on the offensive glass leading to a 20-7 edge in second chance points.
The Dolphins’ defense forced 25 turnovers in the game and turned those into 32 points and six points off of the fast break.
The loss drops the Dolphins to 7-12 overall on the season and to 4-8 in Skyline Conference play. They will be back in action again on Wednesday, February 6 at Bard. Tip-off with the Raptors is set for 8:00 p.m.
