Dolphins drop road contest at St. Joseph’s-Long Island
Widgeon posts career-high 18 points

 Senior captain Derek Charlton grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds on Tuesday night.
PATCHOGUE, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men’s Basketball team dropped an 80-70 decision on the road at St. Joseph’s-Long Island on Tuesday night. In his first career start, freshman forward Kenneth Widgeon (Plainfield, NJ/The Hotchkiss School) scored a career-high 18 points. Senior captain Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond’s) also had a strong night, posting a double-double with 12 points and a career-best 16 rebounds.

The Dolphins jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the contest on back-to-back jumpers from Kyle Byrons (Goshen, NY/Burke Catholic) and Joe Cooke (Mount Vernon, NY/Fordham Prep). Four points would match the Mount’s largest lead of the half, as the game was tied on seven occasions in the first period.

Mount Saint Vincent would hold a one point advantage at the half after John Foreman (Tarrytown, NY/Sleepy Hollow) knocked down a free-throw with 1:26 remaining and Charlton followed with a pair of his own with just 50 seconds remaining. St. Joseph’s Mike Crisci closed out the half with a jumper with just under 40 seconds remaining to make the score 35-34 in favor of the Mount.

For the half the Dolphins shot 12-40 from the floor and just 1-9 from behind the three-point arc. The Mount converted 10-19 from the free-throw line in the half and out-rebounded St. Joseph’s by a 34-29 margin.

Widgeon scored eight of his 18 points in the first 20:00 and was supported by Dino Johnson (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) with seven and Charlton with six. Charlton led all players with 10 rebounds in the first half.

The Dolphins opened the second half with a hoop from Foreman to open a three point lead with 19:42 remaining in regulation. The Mount would extend its lead to a 10 point advantage with 13:32 to play when Charlton buried a jumper off a steal from Cooke.

Following  a jumper from Widgeon with 10:21 left, St. Joseph’s ran off 11 straight points to take a 64-60 lead with just under eight minutes remaining. The run was capped off by a jumper from Sean Hyde and gave St. Joseph’s the lead for good.

Mount Saint Vincent would get as close as two points with 3:31 remaining on a pair of free-throws from Widgeon, but St. Joseph’s would score the final eight points of the contest to earn the victory.

Johnson and Cooke posted nine points apiece in the game, while Byrons posted eight for the Mount. Widgeon also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in the contest, while Foerman pulled down five boards for the Dolphins. Johnson led the team with three assists in the tilt. Widgeon also posted a team-high three steals, as the Mount forced 17 turnovers.

Mount Saint Vincent shot .346 for the game (27-78) and knocked down just 2-14 from behind the arc. St. Joseph’s held the advantage in rebounds in the game 54-52 and in second chance points 24-22. The Mount held the edge on Tuesday in bench points 23-18 and points off of turnovers 21-18.

Phil Lipari led St. Joseph’s with a game-high 23 points, while teammate David Acree scored 21. Hyde led the way with 12 rebounds for St. Joseph’s who improved to 9-2 overall on the season and a perfect 6-0 in Skyline play.

The loss drops the Dolphins to 3-8 overall on the season and 0-4 in league play. They will return home for the first time since December 1 when they host Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, January 12. Tip-off at Hayes Gymnasium is set for 12:00 p.m.
