Junior Chanel Comis scored three times to become the all-time career points leader in Mount Saint Vincent history with 118, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team lost 18-9 to Vassar College in the ECAC Upstate/Metro Semifinals on Saturday. With the loss, Mount Saint Vincent completes a record-breaking season with a 9-9 overall record. |
Vassar (11-5) wasted little time getting the jump on Saturday, scoring three times during the first five minutes of play to pull ahead for good. Martin scored her first of the game at 24:35 to make it 3-1, but the Brewers went on a 6-0 run over a 13-minute span to extend the lead to 9-1 and all but put the game away. Mount Saint Vincent did not go down without a fight as Comis scored at 7:25 and 6:46 to make it 9-3. After Vassar scored with 6:34 remaining in the first half, Martin added her second of the game with 2:25 remaining in the first half to make it 10-4 at the break, and it appeared that Mount Saint Vincent had some momentum entering the second half of play.
The momentum changed back to Vassar with 29:38 to play in the second half as a spectacular goal made it 11-4, however, the Mount still had some fight left. Junior Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon HS) scored on a Martin assist at 23:46 to make it 11-5, and after a Vassar goal with 23:28 to play made it 12-5, Comis scored her third goal of the game at 22:47 to make it 12-6. Comis's final tally gave her 118 career points, one point more than Adams for the all-time points lead in Mount Saint Vincent history. Comis has 93 career goals and 25 assists. Adams's goal was her 104th career tally as she is currently the program's all-time leader in that category.
After Comis's goal, Vassar broke the game open even further with a 6-1 run over a 14-minute span to make it 18-7. The Mount scored twice in the final 1:30 as freshman Katie Tucci (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville HS) scored her 22nd and 23rd goals of the season for the 18-9 final.
Overall, Vassar outshot the Mount 42-18 and held a commanding 18-3 edge in ground balls. Dolphin goalies Jackie Horn (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville HS) and Nicole Fortier (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme HS) were outstanding in goal as Horn stopped 10 shots during 43 minutes of play, and Fortier stopped six out of 10 shots during 17 minutes of work.
The loss marks the second time in two years that Mount Saint Vincent lost to the eventual ECAC Champion as Vassar defeated #1 Brockport State 9-8 on Sunday for the ECAC Upstate/Metro Championship. The game also saw a milestone for the Dolphins as they became the first Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team to score 200 goals against NCAA competition and finished the season with 208 total goals.
