Junior Eddie Park went a combined 5 for 9 with two RBI's and two runs scored as the Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team split a doubleheader with St. Joseph's (LI) on Saturday. The Dolphins won the opener 13-4 but lost a 4-3 heartbreaker in the night-cap and are now 10-16 overall and 8-8 in Skyline Conference play. |
With their backs against the wall and the final Skyline Conference playoff berth in the balance, Mount Saint Vincent wasted little time jumping out ahead as a first inning Al Schor (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon HS) single drove home Mauzy to put the Dolphins ahead for good. St. Joseph's tied the score three innings later, but the Mount jumped ahead in the sixth inning as Mauzy, Zach Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran HS) and Tanner Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran HS) each drove in runs with singles. That was all O'Leary would need as he was simply brilliant throughout the game.
St. Joseph's made it a 3-2 game with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Dolphins put things away with seven runs during the top of the eighth inning and two runs an inning later and cruised to victory. Mauzy and both Munroes drove in two runs apiece.
The thrill of winning the opener was tempered by a heartbreaking loss during the night-cap that eliminated the Mount from the playoff chase. Mauzy went 3 for 3 with two runs scored, while sophomore Nick Triolo (Homer, NY/Homer Central HS) went 2 for 4 with his first home run of the 2007 season, but the effort was not enough as the Mount fell 4-3 for their most disappointing loss of the season. The Mount scored the game's first three runs and were an out away from victory in the bottom of the seventh inning when St. Joseph's scored four times with two outs for the walk-off victory. The loss ruined a spectacular performance by junior Tony Palandro (Westbury, NY/Clarke HS), who allowed only two runs on two hits over nearly seven innings of work. He also struck out four.
Also for the Mount, Park went 2 for 4, and sophomore Mike Ruckdaschel (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow HS) went 1 for 1 with two walks.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Sunday night when they travel to Farmingdale State for a 6:00 p.m. doubleheader.
