Softball dominates Sarah Lawrence during HVWAC doubleheader
Dolphins outscore Gryphons 33-1 during sweep that improves the Mount to 9-9; Morales earns first career win during nightcap
4/20/2007 - (Bronxville, NY) - During a doubleheader that took place at Sarah Lawrence College, Mount Saint Vincent won the opener 15-0 before cruising to an 18-1 in the nightcap that improved the Dolphins to 9-9 overall and 4-1 in Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) play, all but clinching the #2 seed for the upcoming HVWAC playoffs.
Freshman Esmeralda Morales pitched a complete-game gem during her first career start on Friday, tossing a complete-game two-hitter as the Mount Saint Vincent Softball team earned an 18-1 win during the second game of a doubleheader with Sarah Lawrence. The Dolphins scored a 15-0 win during the opener and are now 4-1 in HVWAC play.

The opener saw Mount Saint Vincent score early and often during a win that saw the Mount earn their second shutout win of 2007. The Dolphins scored seven times in the first inning, and spread their 15 runs over all five innings as they poined out 15 hits and took advantage of four Gryphon errors. Senior Gina Angolillo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison HS) had a huge day at the plate as she went 3 for 4 with two RBI's and three runs scored, while senior Nabela Tahir (Flushing, NY/Cardozo HS) and sophomore Dana McGuire (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville HS) each had two hits and two runs scored. Freshman Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, IN/Hamilton South Eastern HS) earned the win, pitching a three-hitter while striking out two.

The nightcap saw the debut of freshman pitcher Esmeralda Morales (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman), who was simply spectacular on the mound during her first career start. The rookie pitched a complete-game two-hitter and allowed only one earned run while striking out three. That was more than enough for the Dolphins, who once again scored seven runs during the first inning and coasted to victory. Morales was not the only freshman making headlines in game two as fellow rookie Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood HS) had a monster game at the plate, going 4 for 5 with six RBI's and two runs scored. Her offensive heroics included a second inning home run. Also for the Mount, seniors Gina Angolillo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison HS) and Jessica Piccoli (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) each had three hits and three RBI's.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, April 21 when they return to Sarah Lawrence College to host SUNY Old Westbury for a 12:00 p.m. Skyline Conference doubleheader.
