Freshman Megan Gonzalez allowed only two unearned runs over 12 innings of work as the Mount Saint Vincent Softball team split a doubleheader with St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Thursday. The Dolphins lost the opener 2-0 and won the nightcap 24-5, and are now 10-10 overall and 3-1 in HVWAC play. The Dolphins play at Sarah Lawrence College on Friday at 4:00 p.m. |
The opener was a classic pitcher's duel as Dolphin freshman hurler Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, IN/Hamilton South Eastern HS) was in excellent form. She pitched a complete game and struck out eight while not walking a batter. Unfortunately for Gonzalez, her counterpart was just as good, and the teams headed into the sixth inning deadlocked 0-0. It was then that St. Joseph's had a two-out rally as three straight singles to go with two passed balls gave the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead and the victory. Mount Saint Vincent had runners at second and third with one out in the top of the seventh inning, but were unable to tie the score as the Dolphins managed only three hits and seven total baserunners.
The nightcap proved to be a different story as Mount Saint Vincent mustered 24 runs (only nine of which were earned) as nine Lady Bear errors gave the Mount numerous opportunities to score. And the Dolphins toook full advantage, scoring 16 runs during the top of the sixth inning to add to what was already an insurmountable 8-2 advantage. Gonzalez was brilliant once again as she did not allow an earned run during six innings of work, and senior Gina Angolillo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison HS) and junior Mary Kate Walker (Warwick, NY/Burke HS) each drove in three runs. Also for the Mount, freshman Lisa O'Shea (White Plains, NY/Our Lady of Victory) went 2 for 4 with two RBI's and four runs scored, while freshman Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood HS) went 3 for 5 with two RBI's and three runs scored.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Friday, April 20 when they play at Sarah Lawrence College for a 4:00 p.m. HVWAC doubleheader.
