The game was a battle from the start as both teams failed to establish a clear edge during the early going. In fact, despite several golden opportunities for each team, neither team scored during the first nine minutes of play. Centenary finally broke open the scoring with 6:16 remaining in the opening stanza, and doubled their advantage 3:30 later. While the game remained competitive despite the 2-0 Cyclone edge, if there was a back-breaking goal, it came with 35 seconds left in the opening quarter as Centenary extended their lead to 3-0 after 15 minutes. The second quarter was a near carbon copy as Centenary scored twice late in the period to lead 5-0 at halftime, but the game was even closer than the score indicated as Centenary enjoyed only a 23-15 edge in shots, and the Dolphins actually won four of the game's first six face-offs.
The second half saw the Mount turn things up a notch as the Dolphins got on the scoreboard with 6:43 to play in the third quarter as Jason Reynolds (Centereach, NY/Middle Country HS) scored on a Ryan O'Dougherty (Morristown, NJ/Morristown HS) assist. 19 seconds later, the Mount made it a 5-2 game when freshman William Powers (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset HS) scored unassisted for his first career goal. The quarter ended with the Dolphins down by three, but outplaying the host Cyclones.
All hopes of an upset win were dashed in the fourth quarter as Centenary scored twice while the Dolphins scored once for the 7-3 final, but the effort was still the Mount's best of the season. The Dolphins were out-shot 41-33 and out-scooped only 32-30, but by winning 10 out of 13 face-offs, the Dolphins made it a game. They were also supported by Egan, who was simply magnificent between the pipes, as he broke the 20-save mark for the second time this season.
Reynolds finished with two goals to extend his team-leading total to 20 for the season.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, April 21 when they host Manhattanville College at 4:00 p.m. for their 2007 finale. The game will be played at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York.
