Junior Tony Palandro pitched six shutout innings and struck out six while walking only three to lead the Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team to a 5-3 upset win over Manhattanville College on Wednesday afternoon at Manhattanville. With the win, Mount Saint Vincent is now 4-11 overall and 2-5 in Skyline Conference play, but has won two straight games. |
The story of the game on Wednesday was a dominant pitching performance by junior Tony Palandro (Westbury, NY/Clarke HS), who turned in perhaps the finest outing of his career. Palandro pitched six magnificent innings without allowing a run, and he struck out six while walking only three. He left the game with a 3-0 lead that the Mount's bullpen and defense allowed to stand.
Mount Saint Vincent got on the board in the top of the first inning when a Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) sacrifice fly brought home Anthony Brestolli (Wyckoff, NY/Don Bosco). Junior Vinny Prestopino (Bronx, NY/Salesian) made it 2-0 three innings later when he hit his second home run of the 2007 season. In the fifth inning, the lead was extended to 3-0 thanks to two Manhattanville errors, and an RBI by junior Al Schor (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon HS). Mount Saint Vincent all but put the game away in the top of the seventh inning when a Zach Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran HS) single scored Schor to make it 4-0.
Manhattanville scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and two more in the bottom of the eighth to make it 4-3, but in the top of the ninth inning, a Schor single brought home Mike Ruckdaschel (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow HS) to provide the Mount some insurance. The run was all the Dolphin bullpen would need as Munroe recorded the final five outs of the game for a save.
Schor went 1 for 3 with two RBI's and a run scored, while Tanner Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran HS) had two hits.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, April 14 when they host SUNY Old Westbury at 2:00 p.m. The doubleheader will be played at Purchase College.
