Junior Tanner Munroe had a career game during the night-cap of a doubleheader with Centenary College on Monday as he went 3 for 4 with a career-high six RBI's and three runs scored as Mount Saint Vincent rallied from an 8-0 deficit to stun the defending Skyline Conference champions, 11-9. With the win, the Mount is now 3-11 overall and 1-5 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins travel to Manhattanville for a 3:30 p.m. start on Wednesday. |
The opening game saw a back-and-forth affair that saw Centenary lead by as many as three runs, but the Mount never gave up, and thanks to a six-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Dolphins led 8-5 heading into the top of the seventh inning. Centenary scored twice in the top of the seventh to make it 8-7, but Mount Saint Vincent found themselves an out away from clinching the victory. However, that's when controversy struck. During consecutive close calls, Centenary was able to score five runs to take a 12-8 lead and escape with the victory despite a run for the Mount in the bottom of the ninth.
The loss ruined an outstanding pitching performance by junior Jon O'Leary (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot HS), who allowed only three earned runs over six innings. Also for the Mount, junior Al Schor (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon HS) had a two RBI's, and freshman Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS), sophomore Brendan Russo (Westbury, NY/Clarke HS), and sophomore Mike Ruckdaschel (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow HS) combined for eight hits and four runs scored.
The dramatic ending to the first game set the stage for even more excitement during game two as Centenary led 8-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, but Mount Saint Vincent rallied for three runs in the fourth inning, four runs in the fifth inning, and four more during the sixth inning to clinch their first win in nearly a month. Junior Ryan Strub (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot HS) earned the win as he pitched a complete game and struck out five, while junior Tanner Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran HS) had a monster day as he went 3 for 4 with a career-high six RBI's and three runs scored. All three of his hits were doubles. Also for the Mount, juniors Nick Canzano (Farmington, NY/Victor Central HS) and Vinny Prestopino (Bronx, NY/Salesian) each had two hits.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, April 11 when they travel to Manhattanville College for a 3:30 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
